Stacker for OS/2 & DOS Supplement for Installing OS/2 2.1 on a Stacker Drive The Stacker for OS/2 & DOS User's Guide includes instructions (in Appendix B) for installing OS/2 on a Stacker drive. Those instructions are valid for OS/2 2.0. However, if you are installing OS/2 2.1 or later, the files in this update (PREP21.EXE, POSTINST.EXE, and INST121.EXE) make the process simpler. PREP21 modifies the OS/2 installation diskette labeled "OS/2 Diskette 1", while POSTINST establishes the final access. Before you start installing OS/2: * Copy the three files to your STACKER\OS2 directory (or wherever your Stacker files are). * Then copy the same files to Stacker for OS/2 & DOS Disk 2. This procedure details the use of PREP21.EXE and POSTINST.EXE to install OS/2 2.1 on a Stacker drive, explaining where to deviate from the OS/2 installation procedure. It replaces steps 1 to 18 beginning on page 153 in the Stacker for OS/2 & DOS User's Guide. The rest of the information in Appendix B still applies. To install OS/2 2.1 on a Stacker drive 1. Use DISKCOPY to copy the second OS/2 diskette, which is labeled "OS/2 Diskette 1" (it contains CONFIG.SYS). 2. Label the copy "OS/2 Diskette 1-Stacker". You'll need both the copy and the original diskette during the OS/2 2.1 installation process. 3. Insert "Stacker for OS/2 & DOS Disk 1" and restart your system. 4. If DOS doesn't recognize the Stacker drive on which you wish to install OS/2 2.1, type "CONFIG A:" at the DOS prompt to update the CONFIG.SYS file on the floppy disk. Then restart the system with the same disk. 5. Insert "Stacker for OS/2 & DOS Disk 2" and at the DOS prompt type "PREP21 hdrive: fdrive:" where hdrive is the DOS drive letter of the Stacker drive on which you wish to install OS/2 2.1 and fdrive is the floppy drive where you will insert OS/2 diskettes. For example, to use floppy disks in drive A and install OS/2 on Stacker drive C, type "PREP21 C: A:" 6. When PREP21 prompts you to insert OS/2 diskette 1, insert the copy you made and labeled "OS/2 Diskette 1-Stacker". 7. When PREP21 asks you to insert the OS/2 disk that contains the SYSINSTX.COM file, insert the "OS/2 Installation Diskette". (Don't worry, PREP21 won't modify or write anything to this disk.) 8. When the DOS command prompt returns, restart the system (CTRL+ALT+DEL). Leave the "OS/2 Installation Diskette" in the drive. Follow the OS/2 installation instructions except: * Whenever the installation program asks you to insert "OS/2 Diskette 1", insert "OS/2 Diskette 1-Stacker" instead. -------------------------------------------------------------------- | CD-ROM: If you are installing OS/2 from CD-ROM, you will not be | | prompted to insert Diskette 1 a second time. Each standard | | "diskette" is read from the CD-ROM. | -------------------------------------------------------------------- ################################################################ # CAUTION: When OS/2 offers to format the partition, don't # # let it. This is a Stacker drive. # ################################################################ At the end of the installation you have to deviate from the standard method again so that OS/2 can successfully start and access your Stacker drives. 9. When the installation is complete, you will be prompted to remove the last diskette and press ENTER to restart the system. Instead, do this: * Have the "OS/2 Installation Diskette" ready to insert. * Remove the last diskette, then press ENTER. * When the screen goes blank, quickly insert the "OS/2 Installation Diskette". The system restarts from drive A instead of the hard disk. * When prompted for the next diskette, insert "OS/2 Diskette 1-Stacker". * When you get the choice of pressing ENTER to continue or ESC to cancel, press ESC. --------------------------------------------------------------------- | CD-ROM: You will not be prompted to remove any diskette. Instead,| | a message tells you that installation is complete and to press | | ENTER to restart the system. When the screen goes blank, insert | | the "OS/2 Installation Diskette" and follow the instructions | | above to restart the system using "OS/2 Diskette 1-Stacker". | --------------------------------------------------------------------- 10. At the OS/2 command prompt, insert Stacker for OS/2 & DOS Disk 2 and type "A:POSTINST" and follow the instructions. After POSTINST has successfully finished, restart the system (CTRL+ALT+DEL). At this point, OS/2 is installed on the boot drive you chose. To access other Stacker drives on your system, use the Stacker CONFIG program (consult your User's Guide). If you want to create or upgrade another OS/2 boot drive on another Stacker drive, start the process again. You'll have to use PREP21 and POSTINST again, so follow the steps precisely as you did for the first OS/2 boot drive. (c) Copyright, 1993 Stac Electronics
