Begin.txt - What to do before you get to the first dungeon

Notice: If you get lost, can't find a dungeon, or just plain
want to know where all the heart pieces are, see the map
included in this walk-through.

You wake up on Koholint Island, in Marin & Tarin's house.
They tell you what happened.  Talk to Tarin and he will give
you your shield!  With the sheild, you can flip enemies and
block attacks.  Tarin tells you that other stuff washed
ashore with you, so it might be wise to go there.  Talk to
everyone in the village to learn some, er, invaluable
information.  With only a shield, you can't get far.  If you
go 2 screen left of Tarin's house, then one screen down, you
can see the library.  Go in it and read all the books (it
sounds like a waste of time, but there are a lot of
important facts in it).  Now you can go to find other things
that washed up with you.  To the shore!  You can explore
parts of the island that are not mentioned here.  I tell the
direct paths to things, exept when there are valuable things
in the area.  From the library, if you go 4 screens down,
and 2 screens right, you can get your sword.  If you cannot
get past the sea urchins, hold the Button and push them out
of your way.  Before you reach it, an owl comes to give you
some unusual information.  Then he tells you to go North, to
the Mysterious Forest.  Now that you have your sword, you
can slash enemies and bushes!  If you hold down the Button
that your sword is on, it will make a noise.  When it does,
release it and you will spin around and slash, a manuver
that is twice as powerful as a normal sword slash!  Now, go
2 more screens to the right.  See the crack in the rocks?
This is the trademark sign that if you bomb walls like that,
a cave will appear!  If you go up 1 screen and left one, you
will see Sales House 'O' Bananas.  He will become important
to you later in the game.  Now go back to Mabe Village
(where you started).  When you are 1 screen above the
library, you should see a  cave like thing at the bottom of
a ledge.  Slash the bushes and fall in.  Viola!  A piece of
heart!  Now, leave, and go 3 screens to the right.  See how
it is full of bushes? Slash them all to collect several
rupees (small, hexagon shaped objects, the currency of
Koholint Island), hearts, and a Secret Seashell! .  You will
need these in a while.  Keep slashing bushes until you have
10 rupees.  Then go to the Trendy Game (1 screen down of
where you found the seashell).  Play the game.  Your first
goal should be to collect rupees.  See tip #2 in Tricks.txt
to learn the technique to catch whatever you want, whenever
you want.  Catch the two 30 rupee prizes, then go after the
Yoshi Doll (thing in the middle).  Also, you should try to
nab the bag of Magic Powder, which you will need later in
the game.  If you have more than 2 items (like when you get
the powder) you can switch by pressing Start, selecting the
item you want, then press the button you want it to be used
on.  Powder can be used to burn many things, and change some
enemies into spinless blobs.  Now that you have the Yoshi
Doll, go to the Quadruplets House (3 screens up and 1 screen
left) and give the doll to the mother.  She will trade it
for a ribbon.  Now go to the small kennel at Madam
MeowMeow's House and trade the ribbon for a can of Dog Food.
It will take a while, but you should keep getting cash at
the Trendy Game until you have at least 200 rupees.  Then go
to the Town Tool Shop and buy the Shovel.  Leave the shop,
come back again, and buy bombs.  To get another Secret
SeaShell, dig inside the kennel.  Did you know that Sale of
Sale's House 'O' Bananas collects canned food?  Go trade
your dog food for some bananas!  Now backtrack again to
Mabe Village.  When you get to Madam MeowMeow's House, go up
2 screens and go fishin'!  To hook the lunker at the end of
the pond, see Tip #3 in Tricks.txt.  The second lunker below
you holds a heart piece so try to catch it too!  If you
want, you can go over to the Flying Rooster statue 1 screen
above Tarin's House and listen to Marin sing.  Now that you
have the Shovel and Bombs, you can go north, to the forest.
In the Mysterious Forest, you will find a hollow log which
is a cave!  Inside you will find 50 Rupees and a heart
piece!  Wander around until you find a fat little raccoon.
Sprinkle powder on his nose to reveal...Tarin!?  Now, if you
go up 1 screen you can retreive the Tail Cave Key!  You can
explore above where you are, but your next objective should
be to go to Tail Cave (near Sale's House 'O' Bananas on the
map).  In the remaining sections of the walkthrough, I will
not tell you where chests and other things are.  They are
either on the map and miscellaneous items are on the trade
list.  And remember, talk to people everytime something
important happens because that might affect what they say!
