C-NOTE SOFTWARE CADENCE Time Synchronizer V1.3 Thank you for downloading the electronic edition of Cadence Time Sychronizer. Please feel free to distribute this evaluation copy provided all program and documentation files are maintained. This file contains the following information: The commercial (you gotta know what it does and how good it is!) The product included in this kit Printing the documentation Licensing Information Ordering Information C-NOTE Software and the Cadence Time Synhronizer are participants in Novell's "YES, it Runs with NetWare" program. The Commercial Isn't It About Time? Time is money. The wrong time can cost you money. PCs and LANs are great, but they are not very good timepieces. Their clocks drift seconds per day. Until now. C-Note's Cadence Network Time Synchronizer for NetWare LANs eliminates all of your time problems. Simply stated: Cadence maintains the correct time and date on your server and workstations -- all the time. Time is crucial to many of the automatic applications running on today's systems: data collection, FAX servers, accounting, time/attendance, backup jobs, and real time systems. Time also affects applications like EMail, network monitoring, order entry, word processing and program source maintenance. Cadence takes care of the time so you don't have to. All of your workstations will have the same time --- the right time. Cadence Knows the Time. Cadence knows because it dials into one of two government run time services. These services, located at the U.S. Naval Observatory and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Colorado, are based on the cesium beam atomic clocks which serve as the official time standard for the United States and are two of the most accurate clocks in the world! The government provides the time as a public service and does not charge for the service (other than the price of the phone call). The time services are used by radio and TV stations, the military, scientists and businesses for whom the correct time is crucial. By periodically calling these clocks, using a modem, Cadence keeps your NetWare server and all its workstation's dates and times exact. (Support for services outside the U.S. and for GPS receivers is under way, and will be available soon.) Cadence Keeps the Time. Among the many features of Cadence, perhaps the most important are Automatic Drift Correction (ADC) and Daylight Savings control. ADC calculates the amount of drift in your server clock. Then, it constantly monitors the clock, making small time adjustments when the clock starts to drift. This feature keeps the time correct -- all the time, and minimizes the number of times Cadence needs to call the time service. Daylight Savings control, if enabled, automatically changes the system time for you in the Spring and Fall. It's a simple, but important, administrative task that often goes overlooked for days. Cadence Offers Advanced Features. Other advanced features include time zone compensation, used in cases where your server is located in a different time zone from your workstation, automatic installation, an activity log, and a statistics display to keep you informed on what Cadence is doing for you. A feature is provided to use a modem on a designated workstation, rather than the server, if desired. Cadence Makes the Call in Seconds. Unattended, Cadence calls either of the services in less than 10 seconds, at the most cost effective times, and can automatically compute (based on your server's PC clock drift) the calling interval necessary to maintain accurate time for your server. Cadence also has a manual and workstation dial mode, allowing you to keep the correct time in those cases where a modem cannot be put on your server. Synchronize all of the servers on your network. An option to Cadence is CadencePlus. CadencePlus synchronizes additional servers on your network to the server running Cadence. Unlike Netware V4, CadencePlus will synchronize any combination of V2, V3 and V4 server. PRODUCT INFORMATION The version of Cadence provided is for Novell V3 and V4 servers (NLM version). It is a fully functional kit. It is set, however, to cease functioning after June 15, 1994. (That still gives you a few weeks to order and reactivate before the daylight savings time change.) Also included in the kit is the CadencePlus, server to server synchronizer option. It is keyed to support 5 additional servers from the master Cadence server. If you have downloaded this product after the trial period has expired, please contact C-Note software, via one of the methods available below, for a software key which will extend the trial period. If you have a V2.2 server, a VAP version is available from C-Note. Please contact us, and we will make a VAP version available to you for testing. MANUAL INFORMATION The manual is supplied in both postscript (CADMPS.ZIP or MANUAL.PS) and PCL (CADMPC.ZIP or MANUAL.PCL) format. If you have an HP Laserjet II or compatible laser printer, you should copy MANUAL.PCL to your printer as follows: C\> copy MANUAL.PCL lpt1: where lpt1 is the port associated with your HP laser printer With a postscript printer, copy MANUAL.PS to your printer: C\> copy MANUAL.PS lpt1: where lpt1 is the port associated with your postscript laser printer Please note that a standard ASCII text version of the manual has been included with the software as MANUAL.TXT. MANUAL CORRECTIONS/ADDITIONS Please note that the manual is for version 1.2. There is only one change to the operating instructions in the manual: There is now a third optional parameter on REQTIME. The parameter is an integer (positive or negative whole number) representing the time zone difference in hours between the server running REQTIME and the server running SERVTIME. (ie. a server on the US West Coast runing REQTIME with a server on the US East Coast running SERVTIME would use the parameter -3 to indicate that its time should be set three hours earlier than the time provided by the SERVTIME server.) If both servers are in the same time zone, a parameter need not be specified.
