AccessDOS Version 1.1 is now available from IBM and replaces AccessDOS Version 1.0. The enhancements in AccessDOS V1.1 are based on requests for changes from users to make AccessDOS even more user friendly. Now when a user starts AccessDOS, the user is presented with the first screen of menus rather than the logo screen. This eliminates several keystrokes to allow quicker option selection. In addition: o AccessDOS Version 1.1 will now allow Windows to load in "enhanced" mode. o Software improvements were made to MouseKeys to allow it to function better with multiple DOS programs which use a mouse when running under the DOS Task Switcher. o Software improvements were made to SerialKeys to allow it to IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 21 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM switch between DOS sessions using the ALT+TAB when running under Task Switcher. o The ADOS/? command displays a short description of AccessDOS and a complete listing of all valid switches. AccessDOS is especially helpful for users with special needs such as eye/hand coordination difficulties or mobility impairments. With AccessDOS features, keyboard operation is possible. AccessDOS' many advantages include: o StickyKeys - allows you to press each key separately when performing multiple key operations like CTRL-C. StickyKeys electronically holds the modifier keys pressed while you press the next key. It controls the operation of the Shift, Alt, and Control keys. o MouseKeys - converts the numeric keypad of your keyboard into a mouse It allows you to move the cursor around the screen and select items just as if you were using a mouse. o RepeatKeys - allows you to set how fast a key will repeat when it is held down. It will even let you disable typematic operation if you are slow to release a key. o SlowKeys - instructs the system not to accept a keystroke unless the key has been held down for a specified amount of time up to two seconds. This is useful in eliminating extraneous keystrokes if you have poor coordination and "bounce" off of other keys while trying to target a specific key. o BounceKeys - prevents double characters from being inputted should you accidentally bounce on a key when pressing or releasing it. o SerialKeys - allows you to perform and control keyboard and mouse functions using optionally available input devices attached to the serial port of your system. o ToggleKeys - provides a "beep" to indicate when Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock keys are activated. This is extremely useful for blind users to be able to know the status of these keys. o ShowSounds - blinks the screen or displays a small musical note in the upper left-hand corner of the displays when the computer makes a sound. This is useful for users who are hearing impaired and can't hear the tones the system makes. AccessDOS V1.1 is made available free of charge from IBM by calling ne of the listed phone numbers or by contacting an IBM Authorized ealer or IBM Branch Office. o United States 1-800-IBM-PCTB (1-800-426-7282) o Canada 1-800-465-7999 o Alaska 1-414-633-8108 (toll call) IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 22 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM IBM PC DOS 6.3 - DATA COMPRESSION, IMPROVED MEM MANAGEMENT ___________________________________________________________ SAN FRANCISCO, April 27, 1994. . .IBM today announced PC DOS 6.3*, the most full-featured DOS available, with integrated data compression, improved memory management and a suite of enhanced utilities. IBM ANNOUNCES GENERAL AVAILABILITY OF FORMTALK ______________________________________________ Having successfully completed an Early Introduction Program with exceptionally high customer acceptance, IBM is announcing general availability of FormTalk Version 1 (Refer to Software Announcement 293-711, dated November 30, 1993). FormTalk is a new PC based forms routing, tracking, and approval software package that brings simplified workflow capability to to business professionals and workgroups. Designed to speed the flow of information through an organization, FormTalk departs from the traditional view of forms -- exploiting the workstation's capabilities and allowing forms to break the bounds of fixed paper size. Unlike existing forms products, FormTalk includes both forms design, fill and routing capabilities in a single low-cost package. FormTalk's easy-to-use design capability allows users to create and implement simple, forms-based business processes without the need for education or the involvement of specialist forms designers. FormTalk makes use of the administrative services of the underlying mail system, removing the need for any additional management. FormTalk forms can include calculations and can validate data as it is IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 24 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM entered on the form -- increasing the accuracy of data collected. Because both forms designs and approver lists can be easily modified, workgroups can quickly adjust business processes to reflect operational changes. FormTalk forms can be tracked through a business process improving productivity and customer service. For example, an organization using FormTalk to implement a customer order application will be able to track customer orders as they move from order entry to credit checking, accounts receivable, dispatch and shipping -- enabling an accurate response to customer inquiries. As part of IBM's workgroup solution strategy, FormTalk will operate with IBM's recently introduced workflow management system, FlowMark*. The integration of these two products will provide a range of workflow solutions to our customers. Initially, FormTalk will operate under OS/2* V2.1 with plans to support Windows 3.1 in 1994. It can use any VIM-enabled mail system, such as Lotus Notes** or cc:Mail**, to route its forms. A FormTalk marketing package will be available by April 15, 1994, on OFCTools. This package will consist of a scripted Presentation Guide, a Fact Sheet, Q's and A's, as well as a self-running demonstration diskette. A separate demonstration package using live code and scripted will also be available. In summary, the new FormTalk product from IBM will boost workgroup productivity, improve customer service, reduce design and printing costs and ensure data accuracy. ULTIMEDIA VIDEOCHARGER EXTENDS LAN VIDEO ACCESS _______________________________________________ RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, May 5, 1994 . . . IBM today announced the availability of Ultimedia* VideoCharger, a cost-effective way to bring video-on-demand to many local area network users. VideoCharger is software that permits a large number of personal computer users to simultaneously access full-motion video. The new product provides users with an easy-to-use, "VCR -remote-like" front-end with easy controls to stop, start, playback, pause and mute. VideoCharger can be used in a variety of environments including offices, hotels, classrooms and conference centers. "VideoCharger's efficiencies encourage customers to integrate video into business or training applications," said Dorene Palermo, director of networking products, IBM Networking Software Division. "Ultimedia VideoCharger lets customers be more creative with delivery of such things as news footage; video on demand; and education on demand for government and schools, among others," added Wally Casey, director of marketing, IBM Personal Software Products division. For example, at IBM's International Education Center, in La Hulpe, Belgium, VideoCharger is in use throughout the hotel/conference center, for delivery of video to 260 guest rooms. Ultimedia VideoCharger converts stored video and accompanying digital audio to analog to be transmitted over television coaxial cable or over Token-Ring LANs using frequency couplers. This allows many desktop clients to access full-motion video simultaneously and enables broadcast of the same video to hundreds of users at the same time. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 29 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM Ultimedia VideoCharger includes client and server software for OS/2* and Windows** environments. The server software works with a variety of file servers where videos may be stored, including IBM LAN Server Ultimedia, IBM LAN Server, and IBM LAN File Services/ESA. The server software exploits video delivery equipment that can aggregate video playback from multiple file servers and video from other sources. This new software product can reduce costs because users can now share different types of digital video playback equipment, much like sharing printers in a LAN environment. The types of video playback resources that can be shared are IBM ActionMedia II** for DVI videos and Optibase PCMotion** for MPEG-1 videos. VideoCharger server software receives video requests from clients and allocates an available video playback resource of the proper type. Ultimedia VideoCharger is available today. The price is $2,950 for a System Kit, which supports up to 10 concurrent digital video players that can be shared by any number of clients. Additional Player Kits supporting 10 more video streams list at $1,950. Client software, which is shipped with the System Kit, is $25 per user license. IBM ANNOUNCES LAN DISTANCE 1.1 ______________________________ May 4, 1994 IBM ANNOUNCES LAN DISTANCE 1.1 WITH NEW CLIENT SUPPORT, MORE CONNECTIVITY, IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND USABILITY LAS VEGAS, Nev., May 4, 1994 ... IBM today announced LAN Distance 1.1, an upgrade of its remote node software which extends the resources of the central office LAN to new platforms, across more communications options with greater performance and usability. LAN Distance enables remote users on OS/2 and Windows PCs to run unmodified LAN applications and have concurrent multiple connections to the central-office server or LAN-attached PCs. LAN Distance 1.1 supports all major LAN environments including IBM LAN Server, Novell NetWare**, Banyan Vines**, Microsoft LAN Manager** and Artisoft LANtastic**. "LAN Distance 1.1 is the most comprehensive remote LAN access solution in the industry," said Art Olbert, director of LAN Systems for IBM's Personal Software Products division. "It gives users extensive connectivity options, supports all major LAN applications, and provides host-like security. Moreover, it allows customers, systems integrators and software developers to easily extend their client/server applications to remote users." LAN Distance 1.1 includes LAN Distance Remote for OS/2 and Windows, and the LAN Distance Connection Server for OS/2. The Connection Server for IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 30 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM OS/2 comes in an eight-port version and a version which can support up to 128 ports, depending upon PC and adapter configuration. The LAN Distance Connection Server provides remote LAN bridging and does not require a dedicated PC. Connectivity enhancements include support for a variety of IBM and OEM communications adapters, including asynchronous, ISDN (basic and primary rate), synchronous (switched and non-switched 56), and x.25 (direct and via asynchronous PAD). The upgrade also features support for additional modems, Ethernet and Token-Ring adapters. Other key new features include LAN-to-LAN bridging, wherein a LAN-attached workstation can instruct the Connection Server to dial another server or remote PC off the LAN. For example, businesses with large numbers of branch offices could use this feature to update software on PCs at all locations. LAN Distance 1.1 features automatic filtering. This feature reduces administration by automatically setting up customized bridge filter tables and improves performance by eliminating unnecessary traffic over the dial-up connection. Usability enhancements build on the product's intuitive graphical interface by providing improved information messages and new utilities that simplify installation. "LAN Distance breaks the 'Big Blue' mold for IBM software products," said Frank Dzubeck, president of Communications Network Architects, Inc. "It is enabled for all LAN operating systems and will be sold through non-traditional IBM software channels. LAN Distance reaches out to the non-IBM world to meet the competition head-on." Reflecting the role of LAN Distance as a major player in remote computing, a number of key communications vendors have joined with IBM to support or bundle the software. Among these are Cubix, which will bundle LAN Distance 1.1 with its ERS fault-tolerant connection server, and Virtual Resources, which is delivering LAN Distance with its SPICE Communications Server. Other vendors supporting LAN Distance include Star Gate Technologies, which is bundling LAN Distance with its Avanstar Serial Adapter; Eicon Corp. which will support the product with its line of synchronous communications adapters, including ISDN, x.25 and Frame Relay; and Digiboard, which will support LAN Distance across its line of asynchronous adapters. Telepartner International has announced a beta release of its PACKET/Distance product which provides x.25 support for LAN Distance 1.1. LAN Distance 1.1 is available now from IBM by calling 800-3-IBMOS2 (800-342-6672), and also through a variety of dealer channels. NEW AS/400 - LAN SERVER 3.01 __________________________________________________________ SYNERGY _______ May 11, 1994 LAN Server/400 makes the AS/400 a competitive file server for PC applications on the Local Area Network with the competitive throughput of LAN Server 3.01 or NetWare. This is the blending of the best of LAN Server 3.01 and the AS/400. With over 20,000 business applications available on the AS/400 and the LAN speed and stability of LAN Server 3.01, client-server is a reality for our customers and software providers. The richest selection of business applications based on the AS/400 can now integrate data, administration and security with LAN Server 3.01 remotely on the LAN or integrated on the AS/400. LAN Server/400 is a hardware and software implementation of LAN Server 3.01 on the AS/400 that provides competitive performance across the LAN. The hardware consists of a hardware FSIOP (File Server Input/Output Processor) that utilizes a 486 DX2 66MHZ processor. From 16Mb to 64Mb of cache is available. The adapter supports two LAN connections that are software configurable to be either Token Ring or Ethernet or a combination of both. IBM LAN Server 3.01, stored on the AS/400 disk, provides the performance and LAN software connection. Access is provided via the LAN Server 3.01 DOS, Windows or OS/2 LAN requesters. The design points for the LAN Server/400 were performance, integrated administration, integrated security, and integrated data. The performance of the AS/400 is improved not only through the LAN Server 3.01 software but the integration of the FSIOP card to handle file services over the LAN to an AS/400. Administration of LAN Server/400 provides for AS/400 style commands for security, configuration, save and restore, move and copies of data. An AS/400 customer can now issue AS/400 style commands to execute these activities locally or across the Ethernet/Token Ring Local Area Network to remote IBM LAN Servers. This allows a customer to utilize existing AS/400 skills to administer and automate LAN activities such as backup and recovery, error detection and PC server monitoring. Security is integrated between the AS/400 and LAN Server 3.01 networks. When the system operator creates a user profile on the AS/400, that user profile is created and synchronized with the LAN Server domain. This IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 33 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM increases security on a Local Area Network by providing a single point of maintenance for customers for both AS/400 applications and LAN based PC applications. IBM LICENSES KODAK PHOTO CD TECHNOLOGY ______________________________________ May 23, 1993 IBM LICENSES KODAK PHOTO CD TECHNOLOGY, ANNOUNCES PLANS TO INTEGRATE PHOTO CD SUPPORT IN OS/2 Atlanta, May 23, 1994 . . . IBM today announced that it has signed a license for Photo CD technology from Eastman Kodak, and will integrate the technology into future versions of OS/2*. This announcement will make OS/2 the first PC operating system to be Photo CD-enabled without requiring users to buy additional software. The ability to read high-resolution color images in the Photo CD Image Pak** format and write to fully-compatible Photo CD discs will make OS/2 even more attractive as a platform for the creation of business presentations, newsletters and other documents, as well as for commercial multimedia programs for applications such as kiosks, sales, education and training. "By integrating Photo CD support into OS/2, we're continuing our commitment to making OS/2 an operating system that offers more power and greater capabilities than competitive offerings," said Wally Casey, director of marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products division. "We believe this will make OS/2 an even more attractive option to anyone who is working with or creating applications that involve multimedia content." An update that enables OS/2 Version 2.1 to read Photo CD images will be made available on-line from IBM, and from commercial services such as CompuServe this summer. IBM will integrate the Photo CD read-only technology and the capability to write Photo CD images into a future version of OS/2. The licensing agreement with Kodak also gives IBM the ability to deliver integrated Photo CD support in its other operating system platforms. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 40 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM "This is an important step for Photo CD compatibility," said Fred Geyer, general manager, Marketing and Sales, Kodak Digital and Applied Imaging. "The five million users of the OS/2 platform now have the same easy access to Photo CD images as they do to the rest of their data. This agreement and technology make access to Photo CD transparent to OS/2 applications." Kodak's Photo CD system allows color images, including 35mm photos, scanned images and computer-generated color graphics, to be stored in the Photo CD format. Up to 100 high resolution Photo CD images can be stored on a single Photo CD master disc. The master discs store images at five levels of resolution, ranging from 2048 x 3072 pixels to 128 x 192 pixels. Discs carrying the Photo CD logo can be played using a CD-ROM drive on computers running any compatible operating system, or viewed on a television screen using any one of a wide range of other playback devices. With the introduction of OS/2 2.1, OS/2 has become the operating system of choice for delivering multimedia to the desktop and the network. The 32-bit power of OS/2, combined with its integrated multimedia capabilities, offers end-users and application developers a uniquely powerful and full-featured multimedia platform. With the addition of integrated Photo CD support in OS/2, any OS/2 application that supports display or manipulation of images will be able to view Photo CD images. This includes all applications which use the documented OS/2 multimedia interface. For example, current versions of Ultimedia Perfect Image/2 image processing and enhancement software; Ultimedia Builder/2, an easy-to-use multimedia presentation development package; and Ultimedia Workplace/2, a tool for linking multimedia information and databases, will be able to exploit this capability. ** Indicates trademark or registered trademark of: Eastman Kodak Co. NEW VERSIONS OF DBS/2 AND DB2/6000 PLANNED __________________________________________ May 25, 1994 Further enhancing its client/server database products across platforms, IBM today unveiled plans for Version 2 of DATABASE 2* for OS/2* (DB2/2*) and DATABASE 2 for AIX/6000* (DB2/6000*), two client/server relational database management systems. DB2/2 and DB2/6000 bring the power, performance and reliability of IBM's core DB2 database technology to the desktop and workstation user. The new versions will offer enhanced function and performance to take advantage of extended relational capabilities, an industry leading SQL optimizer, large database support, and access to DB2/2 and DB2/6000 data from host applications. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 41 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM "Customers today demand solutions which support their heterogeneous computing environments," said Janet Perna, director of database technology, IBM Software Solutions. "With the delivery of these products, IBM is meeting customer requirements for database technology with a proven track record for supporting mission critical applications in an open environment." DB2/2 and DB2/6000 are 32-bit relational database management systems that support DOS, Microsoft Windows** and OS/2* clients, with DB2/6000 also supporting X terminal and AIX clients. Through DDCS/2* and DDCS/6000*, IBM's Distributed Database connection Services* products, DB2/2 and DB2/6000 users can access transparently and update a variety of host databases, including DB2 for MVS*, DB2/VM and VSE (SQL/DS*) and DB2/400*. Extended Relational Capabilities Because many users of relational database management systems are developing applications that include object-oriented and multimedia capabilities, Version 2 of DB2/2 and DB2/6000 offer extensive support for objects including text, voice and image data. By allowing the storage of very large (multi-gigabyte) binary or text objects in the database, DB2/2 and DB2/6000 let users work with multimedia objects such as documents, video, images and voice, in addition to text. DB2/2 and DB2/6000 Version 2 include support for user-defined functions (UDFs), user-defined types (UDTs), triggers, constraints and recursive SQL, enabling customers to build advanced business applications. SQL Optimizer DB2/2 and DB2/6000 Version 2 incorporate enhanced cost-based SQL optimizer technology to reduce access time to data, allowing customers to exploit and analyze the vast amount of valuable information contained in their databases. The new SQL optimizer can provide significantly improved response time for SQL queries without the application designer being concerned as to the complexity or structure of the query. Large Database Support To accommodate the growing number of users managing mission-critical databases that are continuously growing in size and importance, IBM has made a number of enhancements to Version 2 of DB2/2 and DB2/6000 that provide higher operational capacity, more flexibility and improved performance. With the new versions, users can divide a database into separately managed parts called tablespaces, making data easier to manipulate and process. When creating tables or indices, users can choose the tablespace in which the data resides. Users can also increase the size of tablespaces by adding more devices or storage space. Distributed Database and Data Replication IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 42 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM The new versions of DB2/2 and DB2/6000 include the Distributed Relational Database Architecture* (DRDA*) Application Server capability, which allows DB2/MVS, DB2/400 and DB2/VM host applications, along with any application that uses the DRDA Application Requestor function, to access data located in DB2/2 and DB2/6000 databases. Additionally, by using IBM's Data Replication products, data may be replicated from multiple sources including DB2 (MVS), DB2/400, IMS, and VSAM into DB2/2 and DB2/6000 databases. DB2/2 and DB2/6000 Version 2 will be made available to customers in October through a beta program. DB2/2 Version 1.2, DDCS/2 Version 2.2 IBM also announced new releases of DATABASE 2* OS/2* (DB2/2*) and Distributed Database Connection Services/2* (DDCS/2*). DB2/2 Version 1.2 and DDCS/2 Version 2.2 protect customers' investments in their information systems by offering enhanced integration with Novell NetWare LANs, support for Windows applications using Microsoft's ODBC interface, new functions which enhance compatibility between DB2/2 and DB2 (MVS), and flexible pricing options which offer a lower entry price for DB2/2 client/server applications. DB2/2 V1.2 provides enhanced integration with Novell NetWare LANs by offering support for the Novell IPX/SPX communications protocol. This allows DOS, Windows, and OS/2 workstations on a Novell NetWare LAN to be used as clients to DB2/2 servers and through DDCS/2 as clients to DB2 host-based servers without requiring any additional communication products to be installed or configured. An enhanced ODBC driver is included with the new DB2 client or Windows. IBM's DB2 ODBC driver provides popular Windows applications with access to enterprise data. Windows applications using the ODBC interface are now able to access data stored in any of the DB2 family of relational databases. OS/2 users can also take advantage of ODBC support when running Windows applications in the WIN-OS/2 environment. IBM has changed the pricing structure of DB2/2 V1.2 and DDCS/2 V2.2 to provide a lower cost entry for DB2/2 LAN-based and host-based client/server applications with scalable pricing for larger systems and future growth. Prices are based on the number of users concurrently connected to the database server and to host-based servers respectively. The base products are each enabled for up to four concurrent users. Additional user connections are available for both products in either 10-or 50-user connection increments. DB2/2 V1.2 and DDCS/2 V2.2 will be generally available on June 30. It controls access to the component files and provides the ability to store versions of an entire application so that all components of the application, at a particular time or a particular version, can be recreated. The version control model supports serial and parallel development, and includes a merge tool for reconciling changes. CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT Configuration Management identifies and classifies objects and their relationships to other objects into a build tree. The build tree graphically represents how objects in an application fit together and allow you to manage those objects and their relationships. APPLICATION BUILD Management facility and uses it to build complete applications or application components from their subcomponents. Application Build incorporates the ability to spread the build across multiple processors in parallel and to manage the build on target platforms. It automatically determines include dependencies, updates the build tree (if needed), checks for minimal set of objects that need to be rebuilt, and builds the application. The build process also includes the ability to build applications for local or remote systems, and to build applications, which execute in multiple environments. ELECTRONIC SOFTWARE PACKAGING AND DISTRIBUTION Electronic Software Packaging and Distribution extends the conventional compile/link steps of the Application Build function, to also include support for performing transformation steps needed to prepare the application for use. This includes specific function that allows applications to be distributed electronically using LAN-based file server technology, or using IBM NetView (R) Distribution Manager/2. The IBM LAN data dictionary will also provide a migration tool to move information from the OS/VS DB/DC Data Dictionary to the IBM LAN data dictionary. DOCUMENTING YOUR APPLICATION SYSTEM The application system documentation part of the IBM LAN data dictionary will be able to assist in the documentation of all source module relationships. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 52 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM It will also help redevelop existing applications by providing information on how applications, jobs, and programs are related to one another. To do this, the IBM LAN data dictionary will scan JCL libraries, download the needed data to the workstation, and populate its data store. By analyzing this data through the use of canned and custom queries, the IBM LAN data dictionary will provide a better understanding of your organization's portfolio of applications. PERFORMING IMPACT ANALYSIS The IBM LAN data dictionary will provide various canned and custom queries against both applications and data to show the relationships between, and the effects of changes on, the application parts and data parts. The reports on the query results can be printed for further analysis. USING LEADING EDGE OO TECHNOLOGY The IBM LAN data dictionary will provide facilities for versioning, model extensibility, constraints, a class browser, and an instance browser built upon the solid technology of ODI's distributed client/server object-oriented database, ObjectStore. An object-oriented repository has significant advantage both in performance and in its ability to handle object models industrial-strength application development environment. At times it is difficult for our customer's and even IBMers to properly position these initiatives as there is product overlap in function etc. This document was designed to help us explain the how/why of NetFinity! NETFINITY POSITIONING Questions/Answers (1 June 94) What are the major functions provided by NetFinity? NetFinity is an application designed to provide a PC HARDWARE management system for local and remote management of PC server, desktop, and mobile PC computer systems. NetFinity applications, called services, are packaged into two products, NetFinity Manager and NetFinity Services. Services are installed on all PC systems in the NetFinity environment and the Manager is installed on PC systems which will serve as LAN administrators or help-desk workstations. NetFinity can be extended to support additional PC hardware components. What is the role of NetFinity? NetFinity is the PC hardware management system for all PC Company systems and options. New PC server and hardware options will ship with NetFinity extensions that can be installed into an existing NetFinity environment. NetFinity will provide local and remote systems management of any new IBM PC hardware features or systems. In the near future, NetFinity will be packaged and shipped with the high-end PC systems (servers). Is NetFinity 'strategic'? Netfinity will continue to be enhanced in support of PC Company hardware features and systems. NetFinity will be THE product developed and supported for this purpose. However, broader network and systems management support for the enterprise is provided by IBM products that are complementary to NetFinity. Use the term 'strategic' carefully or not at all in this context, because some customers might interpret that to mean "the only management product". It is not always possible to label a software application as strategic, since applications evolve and integrate with other applications over their life cycle. Moreover, the function is strategic. NetFinity is 'strategic' to the PC Company, but be explicit with the context. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 59 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM What is meant by "systems management" as provided by NetFinity? NetFinity focuses on managing PC hardware systems, while products like LAN NetView focus on both hardware and software management, particularly in enterprise-level environments. NetFinity's growth path is toward broader hardware management for PC systems and options. There are some general systems management functions in NetFinity, but only enough to allow the product to compete stand-alone against other hardware management products like Compaq Insight Manager. Use of the term "systems management" with NetFinity without further explanation has confused customers, because 'systems' is assumed to mean operating systems, application software, and other non-hardware components in the workstation. What is meant by 'systems management' in the SystemView context? SystemView, which is IBM's corporate initiative for managing your I/S organization, uses "systems" to refer to the totality of network and processor hardware and software. By contrast, NetFinity manages the PC-based hardware components. Is NetFinity a "management platform"? Comprehensive network and system management platforms are provided by the NetView family of products (NetView, NetView/6000, LAN NetView) and the AS/400. By 'platform', we mean a management system with the following properties: compact. - programming environment for application development - multi-protocol, multi-transport - management APIs - standards-based - vendor support program Even though NetFinity is extensible to new PC hardware features and systems, its scope is not comprehensive network and system management nor arbitrary extension by other vendors. NetFinity is a managing system focused on PC hardware. In the terminology of management systems, NetFinity would be called an "element management system" for PC hardware. What is the role of LAN NetView? NOTE: LAN NetView R1 (Oct/93) was developed by PSP/Austin. Future releases will be developed by Enterprise Management NSD/RTP.) LAN NetView is a network and systems management platform with multiple applications and agents. LAN NetView's initial focus is on managing OS/2 2.x, DOS 5.0 or above, and DOS with Windows 3.0 or above. Additionally, it can manage OS/2 LAN Requesters, IBM LAN Server 3.0 and IBM Extended Services Database IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 60 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM Manager, Novell NetWare servers, DB2/2 databases and CM/2 communications gateways. An initial set of LAN NetView applications from IBM provided support for performance, fault, and configuration management, as well as linkage to NetView on the 390. Other applications from IBM or others are available, such as LMU LAN NetView Management Utilities (LMU) from IBM and NetWare Services Manager (NSM 1.5) from Novell. LAN NetView is an open systems management platform with applications for Fault, Performance, Configuration, Host Connection, File Transfer, Remote Commands, File Monitoring and Scheduling. In LAN NetView R2, the SNMP protocols will be used with IPX, NetBIOS and TCP/IP communications between the manager and remote agents. Agents available allow for management of OS/2, LAN Server, and LAN Requestor. LMU is packaged with LAN NetView in the next release (mid/94), providing additional applications and agents for DOS, DOS Windows, OS/2, Novell NetWare, and Macintosh. The configuration applications support Asset Management by collecting Vital Product Data (VPD). The information is collected from remote systems, and stored in a relational file. This allows users to display or print reports of asset information. Reports can be for collections of workstations, or for individual workstations. The next release of LAN NetView (mid/94) will incorporate the SNMP infrastructure and common applications from NetView/6000, as well as provide SNMP-based agents for certain LAN components. The primary purpose for this evolution is to bring the infrastructure from LAN NetView and NetView/6000 closer together in order to leverage the same vendor/IBM application base. Why are NetFinity and LAN NetView separate products? NetFinity's specific focus on PC hardware management may be needed by customers who have no additional management requirements that would dictate a comprehensive management system like LAN NetView. Will NetFinity and LAN NetView work together? Today, both NetFinity and LAN NetView can be co-resident on the same PC, providing complementary software/hardware systems management support. In the near future, LAN NetView will detect the presence of NetFinity services on the managed PC systems and a menu selection will be added to LAN NetView to enable the user to launch the NetFinity services. This will allow NetFinity services to appear as new application support for LAN NetView. This combination enables customers using NetFinity to upgrade their systems management capabilities to LAN NetView without losing any of the hardware management functions of NetFinity. On the other hand, IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 61 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM customers who are using LAN NetView can enhance their PC systems management functions by adding NetFinity for hardware management. Is the Vital Product Data (VPD) collected by NetFinity and LAN NetView the same? LAN NetView collects both software and hardware VPD. However, the hardware VPD collected by NetFinity is more detailed, since NetFinity exploits a variety of hardware interfaces for this information. Therefore, NetFinity is the application needed to provide a very granular level of access to PC hardware VPD. In 1995, the hardware instrumentation will be provided by a common interface based on the DeskTop Management Task Force (DMTF) APIs. At that time, a common set of VPD information will be available to all managing systems. Should a customer have both LAN NetView and NetFinity in their solution? This depends on customer requirements measured against the detailed PC hardware management capability of NetFinity. LAN NetView and NetFinity together will provide the most robust hardware and software systems management solution in the industry. Will NetFinity support the new DeskTop Management Task Force (DMTF) interfaces? Yes, in 1995, key NetFinity services like the System Information Service will be instrumented to the DMTF interfaces and shipped with the NetFinity product. This will enable any management system that supports accessing the DMTF interfaces to gather detailed hardware information about IBM PC systems. What products does NetFinity compete with in today's marketplace? Products like the Insight Manager from Compaq and LANDesk from Intel are the closest fit for direct competitors for NetFinity. What are the new functions in NetFinity V2.0? NetFinity V2.0 adds new functions to several of the NetFinity V1.1 services, including compact. - Floating, scalable monitors - Additional alert handlers - Expanded Remote (PC) System Manager functions - Improved PC System Profile interface NetFinity V2.0 will also introduce several new features: Windows Client Support: NetFinity Services V2.0 features client support for Windows, enabling you to access and manage PC systems that use Windows 3.1 Enhanced Mode, locally and remotely (with NetFinity Manager for OS/2). IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 62 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM Database Export Capability: NetFinity can store all PC hardware data gathered by the System Information Tool in a database that can then be accessed and formatted with DB/2. Scheduler: NetFinity's Scheduler service enables you to schedule NetFinity services to automatically start on stop on your own system, or on any number of remote systems. With Scheduler, you can automatically compact. Update your System Information database, print System Information reports, or generate System Information history files Send and receive files or directories to or from remote PC systems, in support of updating the System Information database - Update system partitions - Restart systems - Power-on Error Detect Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA) With NetFinity's new PFA service, NetFinity will continually watch your disk drives and alert you to any failure prediction messages reported by PFA-enabled drives. Also, NetFinity's PFA service monitors and tracks read/write errors on ANY disk drive, enabling you to recognize and replace failing drives before valuable data is lost. Finally, PFA monitors I/O utilization of your drives. Since database export and scheduling are two functions provided by a general-purpose systems management platform (like LAN NetView), why are these functions provided by NetFinity? For small environments or when customers require very little additional management function, NetFinity is required to operate without a general-purpose systems management platform present. In this case, the database export and scheduling functions of NetFinity are focused specifically on its PC hardware capabilities. What are the major functions provided by LAN NetView Management Utilities for OS/2 (LMU)? IBM LAN NetView Management Utilities for OS/2 (LMU) provides systems management of LANs for a complex mix of DOS, DOS/Windows, OS/2 & Novell servers and requesters, and Apple MacIntosh clients for both Token Ring and Ethernet LANs. LMU manages both servers and requesters in IBM LAN Server and Novell NetWare networks by providing the following complete and comprehensive systems management functions: compact. - Operations management IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 63 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM - Configuration management - Performance management - Fault/Problem management Specifically, LMU provides the customer with: A graphical display of LAN stations and their status, panel-driven commands and notification of alert conditions. A transport method by which systems management applications can be invoked remotely and systems management data can be sent to a central collection point. A set of IBM-supplied LAN systems management applications. Software to maintain an OS/2 database that contains the response information from the IBM-supplied management applications. Communications with higher level NetView platforms such as; NetView for 390, LAN NetView, NetView/6000 and with LMU/6000 management of your IP, IPX and NetBIOS devices from one NetView/6000 console, giving integrated PC LAN status into enterprise management. How do NetFinity and LMU relate? NetFinity can be used in conjunction with LMU as a complementary product that provides hardware management services in addition to the systems management features and functions of LMU. In addition to its standalone capability, LMU will be integrated into the next release of LAN NetView. The desired design point is to integrate all relevant management applications like NetFinity and LMU onto the management platform designed for workgroup management, LAN NetView. How does the asset information provided by LMU and NetFinity compare? LMU and NetFinity provide comparable/equivalent asset information for the workstation hardware. However, NetFinity information is more detailed and granular, as appropriate for an application that is specific to PC hardware management. LMU provides asset information about the workstation beyond the PC hardware information, including application software information. IBM INTRODUCES VISUALIZER _________________________ May 24, 19194 IBM INTRODUCES VISUALIZER TO HELP USERS TURN DATA INTO BUSINESS INFORMATION IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 64 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM SOMERS, N.Y., May 24, 1994 . . . Enabling workgroups to make the most of their data, IBM today announced the IBM Visualizer family, modular software designed to link decision makers with information that can help them understand their business and respond more rapidly to market changes and opportunities. The Visualizer family consists of modules that enable business professionals to easily query, analyze and present data. Visualizer Query, the core of the family, provides powerful, yet easy-to-use query and reporting capabilities. The first release of Visualizer Query is optimized for access to all members of IBM's robust relational database family, DB2*. By the end of 1994, Visualizer will work with databases from a variety of suppliers such as Oracle and Sybase. Building on Visualizer Query, a number of optional modules will provide a range of charting, analysis, planning and development capabilities. One module will enable users to query multimedia data sources such as scanned images, video clips and audio. This modular approach allows users to pick and choose those functions best suited to their unique business needs and assures compatibility and scalability between Visualizer modules. Exceptional Ease-of-Use Based on the IBM System Object Model (SOM) object technology, Visualizer provides an exceptionally easy-to-use and flexible end user interface. Data sources and Visualizer modules are represented as visual symbols or objects which can be easily moved around the desktop to perform query, reporting or analysis. Each activity or action can be performed with a few clicks of the mouse. For example, printing is as simple as dragging a chart or report object and dropping it onto the printer object. Visualizer results can be easily communicated across the workgroup through links with Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)-enabled desktop applications such as word processors and spreadsheets, as well as Vendor Independent Messaging (VIM)-enabled e-mail packages. "Today's corporations are constantly looking for ways to turn data -- such as sales performance or regional inventory levels -- into information that can help them build or maintain competitive advantage," said Dick Sullivan, director of workgroup solutions marketing, IBM Software Solutions. "Visualizer helps marketing, sales, financial and customer service professionals make informed business decisions by offering an intuitive visual interface that has the power to help them locate their data, make sense of it and act on the results, quickly and accurately." Visualizer Query Designed for business professionals that need access to distributed relational data, Visualizer Query provides useful features such as point-and-click menus, help texts and toolbars for browsing data. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 65 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM Visualizer Query allows users to join and group data tables for analysis and use a powerful reporting function to create detail, summary and exception reports. While Visualizer does not require users to know SQL, more technical professionals can directly manipulate SQL statements produced by Visualizer Query if they wish. To facilitate the location of data, Visualizer Query works with IBM's DataGuide*, a data cataloging tool that helps users pinpoint and manage data. DataGuide enables a user to understand where a particular piece of data is stored, how it relates to other data in the enterprise and which member of the workgroup is responsible for its maintenance. Visualizer Query will be generally available on OS/2 in August at a single user list price of $199, and on AIX in June at an average concurrent user list price of $300. Visualizer Query for OS/2 will also be available with DB2/2 for $549. IBM also intends to deliver a Microsoft Windows** version of Visualizer Query by mid-1995. Optional Visualizer Modules Additional Visualizer modules will enable users to convert data gathered by Visualizer Query into useable business information, or to automate and customize the Visualizer working environment. These modules include: o Visualizer Charts - Provides six charting formats: pie, line, bar, scatter, mix and surface. These charts will be available in 2D or 3D formats and can have customized titles, colors and fonts. o Visualizer Procedures - Allows non-technical users to automate procedures using scheduling and timing functions so that repetitive tasks, such as weekly reports, can be run on an automatic or off-hour basis. o Visualizer Development - Provides a comprehensive set of object-oriented programming tools for GUI customization to meet the needs of individual end users. o Visualizer Ultimedia* Query - Enables users to access text, images, video and audio data from the desktop. Searches will also be able to be conducted, via Query by Image Content (QBIC), on the basis of the color, texture and shape of items. o Visualizer Statistics - Provides over 50 statistical analysis options and methodologies including: sample testing, trend identification, probability analysis, quality control, variance analysis, and forecasting. o Visualizer Plans - Builds multidimensional models and provides the ability to "slice-and-dice" the information to gain new visual perspectives. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 66 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM Visualizer Charts and Development for OS/2 will be generally available in August. Visualizer Ultimedia Query, Plans, Statistics and Procedures for OS/2 will be generally available in September. Client/Server Integration To ensure Visualizer users can take advantage of the benefits of their existing host-based applications, Visualizer will work with IBM's QMF*, Query Management Facility and AS, Application System. These host-based applications provide robust query and analysis functions for large datasets. Their integration with Visualizer will enable users to extend the power of QMF and AS resources to the workstation environment. Support for QMF and AS will be available in November. IBM ADVERTISING PROGRAM OFFERS ADVERTISING DISCOUNTS ____________________________________________________ May 23, 1994 IBM ADVERTISING PROGRAM OFFERS ADVERTISING DISCOUNTS TO HARDWARE, SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS AND PC MANUFACTURERS ATLANTA, May 23, 1994 . . . IBM today announced a program that offers advertising discounts for PC manufacturers and developers of hardware and software products for OS/2* and LAN Systems to use in high-impact publications. Starting this month, companies can use the Personal Software Products Advertising Program to increase and enhance their advertising through the use of discounted rates negotiated for them by IBM. "This program is for certified developers of products for OS/2 and LAN Systems," said Joanne Meleski, advertising manager for IBM's Personal Software Products division. "It promotes the benefits of our certification program; increases industry awareness of our products and the applications that run on them; and complements our ongoing national PSP advertising. It's a win-win proposition." IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 89 OS/2 APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT NEWS In addition to reduced rates, the PSP Advertising Program provides developers with OS/2 and LAN systems certification marks to spotlight their products and complement national IBM advertising. The certification marks are available to developers whose products pass the IBM Certification Program, which signifies that hardware and software products are compatible with IBM operating systems or LAN systems products. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 90 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES _________________________ WORKPLACE OS DESCRIPTION BY LEAD ARCHITECT __________________________________________ From "PowerPC News" WORKPLACE OS: A MACHINE WITH MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES "We'll have to come up with some better names - we know that" says Paul P Giangarra, lead architect of Workplace OS, referring to his baby. Its seems, therefore, that when the operating system finally appears later this year, it will bear the imaginative title 'OS/2 for PowerPC'. The architect hasn't had much time to do any architecting over the last couple of months. Instead he's been working as evangelist-in-chief for the technology which is the foundation of IBM's hopes for desktop software/the desktop. "What we are trying to do is something that IBM has not done very well, and that is spread the word" he says - giving the impression of a man who has been virtually living on aeroplanes. Recently he has spent his life talking to software authors, large corporates and, of course, journalists. It's a role that he obviously relishes - presenting information about the software with a verve reminiscent of Jeff Goldblum's scientist in 'The Fly'. Giangarra has been with IBM since 1977 and after working on a number of operating system and communications projects, ended up as chief designer for OS/2. A biography from IBM is at pains to point out that he didn't join the OS/2 effort until version 1.2 was virtually complete, so you can't place the earlier incarnations at his door - it is in versions 1.3 and 2.0 that we can see his work. Workplace OS' structure is now well defined. Its heart is a microkernel, a thin layer of code which provides the lowest of lowest-common-denominator functions necessary to the operating system. The basics for inter-process communication, I/O, interrupts, memory management and multiprocessor support - these are the province of the microkernel. When IBM was looking around for a suitable foundation it came across Carnegie Mellon University's Mach 3.0 which it took, trimmed, tweaked, hardened and then used. It is the same microkernal that is used in Taligent, but more of that later. Like any good foundation, Mach it is more or less invisible to the end user. To IBM, however it is vital, acting as an isolating layer between the hardware below and the other software above. It is worth noting that the Microkernal does not provide complete isolation: there are still issues such as 'Endianess' - the byte ordering, which it cannot hope to paper over. Still, it does allow IBM to concentrate a lot of the messy, hardware specific parts of the operating system into one place. Microkernal-based operating systems tend to be easily portable operating systems. As we have said, the microkernal only deals with the low level stuff. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 91 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES Everything else that goes to make up the operating system sits on top, either in 'personality neutral services' or the operating system-specific 'personalities'. +---------OS/2 For PowerPC------------------+ ] ] ] +-----------+ +-----------+ +-----------+ ] +-----------+ ] ] OS/2 ] ] DOS/Win ] ]Personality] ] ] Other ] ] ]Personality] ]Personality] ] Neutral ] ] ]Personality] ] ] ] ] ] ] Services ] ] ] ] ] +-----------+ +-----------+ +-----------+ ] +-----------+ +--------------------------------------------------------+ ] IBM MICROKERNAL ] ] (MACH-BASED) ] +--------------------------------------------------------+ Giangarra favours the shorter, but more descriptive phrase "shared stuff" for Personality Neutral Services. The shared stuff modules - of which there are many - contain all the things common to many operating systems, but which don't have a place in the kernel. Shared stuff means that networking, file systems and the like only have to be implemented once. Certainly, if the personality-writer has an overwhelming desire to create a bespoke file system he, or she can write one, but generally its possible, to fall back upon Personality Neutral Services. PNS modules can even implement services traditionally outside the scope of the operating system - for example a multimedia "engine", which can then be shared by all of the personalities. The idea is that third party developers will be wooed into developing such plug-ins. In the great scheme of things PNS is incredibly important. It allows IBM to add capabilities to its operating system by stealth and it should also allow a more-or-less smooth integration of object-orientated services as they are developed. Though wide in scope, PNS facilities do not provide a graphical user interface, neither do they necessarily bare their interfaces to programmers at large. Instead they are accessed via the operating system personalities. These provide developers and users with the application programming interfaces, graphical user interfaces, semantics and thread -scheduling that they are used to seeing from their respective operating systems. This summer, IBM will introduce several enhancements to the Intel-based OS/2: a symmetric multiprocessing version will appear, and the mainline Intel-based offering will be slimmed down considerably. "The goal here is to be able to pre-load on a 4MB machine", Giangarra says, explaining that the operating system will be approximately 2MB smaller than it is today. Eventually (sometime in 1995), WPOS will be ported to the Intel platform and the summer release probably represents the last honing of the native Intel implementation. OS/2 for PowerPC will have to wait some time for the innovations. It is unlikely that it will ever fit into 4Mb, mainly because of the code expansion inherent in the move from CISC to RISC. The PowerPC IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 92 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES Reference Platform document specifies 8MB as the minimum configuration suitable for WPOS, compared to 16Mb for AIX or Windows NT. Giangara says that OS/2 for PowerPC will initially lack multiprocessing support, but once PowerPC 604-based multiprocessing machines appear, "we will have the server". So far, we know that IBM is working on two personalities for Workplace OS - the OS/2 personality and the DOS/Windows personality. Combined, these two produce OS/2 for PowerPC - a split personality, if you like. At the heart of the DOS/Windows side sits an Instruction Set Translator, which converts Intel i86 instructions into PowerPC code on the fly. In principle, IBM's IST is similar to that used in Insignia Solution's SoftWindows, detecting code loops and storing them in a cache so that they only have to be translated once. However, while IBM declines to give details, the noises coming out of its emulation labs sound very gung-ho. To date, the best description of IBM's emulation approach, comes not from IBM itself, but from April's edition of Byte magazine. An excellent article by Tom Halfhill suggests that IBM's IST performs an initial "discovery" pass of the Intel binary, to construct a directed graph which represents the application's flow of execution. This means that the program can be split into basic blocks which are then translated. The range of optimization techniques that the article outlines is impressive and the article quotes IBM as saying that the emulation performs as well as a 486DX/33 on a PowerPC 601 processor. Unfortunately, it neglects to mention clock speed. As previously reported, the IST is not available to the actual OS/2 module, so your existing OS/2 for Intel applications will need to be recompiled for the new processor. In addition to the instruction set translator, IBM continues to take advantage of its now-lapsed rights to the Windows 3.1 source code. The company has taken this source and compiled a number of the APIs into native PowerPC code. How long it can maintain this approach, as Microsoft's Windows code diverges from 16bit Windows 3.1 towards 32bit Windows 4 (Chicago) remains to be seen. An alternative approach to running Windows might be to use the Wabi technology from Sunsoft. IBM's AIX division is taking this tack, but Wabi currently lacks breadth of application support and Giangarra was dismissive of its abilities: "We in the OS/2 world do not believe that Wabi will support enough Windows applications" he says, adding "I personally don't have that much faith in Wabi's ability to provide a good Windows facility for OS/2 users". As for other personalities, an AIX module is also planned to appear at some unspecified future date. It is not a priority since, AIX will run quite happily on the Power Personal machines when they first appear. The biggest question that seems to be in a lot of users' minds is "will I be able to run Macintosh software on IBM Power Personal machines. To be more precise, it is a question that is interesting a lot of Mac users at the moment. The answer is 'no' at least not under Workplace IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 93 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES OS. IBM says that there is no development going on to produce a Macintosh personality for WPOS. The slightly longer answer is 'yes' you will be able to run Macintosh software, but only under the forthcoming PowerOpen-compliant version of AIX which is due in the second half of the year. This will include support for Macintosh Application Services. IBM has made it clear that people should not hold their breath waiting for an Apple System 7 personality. Which leaves Taligent. Taligent, originally a joint venture between Apple and IBM, but now with added Hewlett-Packard, would make a feature in its own right. Originally conceived as a project to build a top-to-bottom object-oriented operating system, the focus has gradually changed until now, the emphasis is on producing a rich set of object-based developers tools and "frameworks". A framework is a large grouping of objects, which together form the basis of a simple application-ette. A framework could be a graphing engine, a text editor or a file-system. Developers can take frameworks and customize them accreting their own objects, or customizing those supplied. IBM's plan is to gradually pull Taligent technology into WPOS in an evolutionary way. Eventually Taligent may exist as the full operating system it was meant to be, but in the meantime Taligent parts will be added to the OS/2 Personality where it will enhance the graphical user interface etc. At the same time other bits of Taligent will appear as personality neutral services, adding Object extensions to any other operating systems hosted by Workplace OS. The biggest unknown about OS/2 for PowerPC and Workplace OS is when it will appear. Generally, IBM is simply saying that it will be in the second half and some observers suspect that means fourth quarter. In fact the schedule seems to be slipping. As we went to press an IBM spokes-person acknowledged that the finished product may not appear until the beginning of 1995. It may appear in beta this summer however. Another IBM spokes-person tells us that WPOS will appear in beta form with the first of the PReP compliant PowerPC machines when they appear in the second half. No wonder IBM is so keen on getting Windows NT ported. Without the Microsoft offering, the only finished OS available would be AIX. Even with NT, however, the first Power Personal systems will lack the finished "Human-Centric" interface which is so important to the division's success. The sight of IBM and Motorola paying for the privilege of porting NT to the PowerPC chip has enraged some OS/2 aficionados - a particularly lively debate is underway on the CompuServe PowerPC Forum at the moment. However IBM is caught in a cleft stick. It cannot afford to rush the operating system out and have it go off half-cocked. That was the fate of the first incarnations of OS/2 and IBM has learned its lesson. WPOS has the potential to be an excellent and innovative operating system, but one false move at the start could kill it. Neither is AIX the kind of operating system that will capture the IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 94 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES hearts of the vast majority of PC buyers. So, Power Personal is left with Windows NT as a stop-gap. However, if Workplace OS is as good as IBM says, it should have the potential to blow NT away on the client machines: "We aim to raise the bar on what people expect from a personal computer" says Giangarra, and it is a bar that could do with some raising. (c)PowerPC News - Free by mailing: add@power.globalnews.com IBM'S VISUALAGE ENVIRONMENT: A DEVELOPER'S DREAM COME TRUE __________________________________________________________ - PC WEEK, 04/11/94, By Bill Machrone VisualAge is the most exciting development tool I've seen --that I can talk about -- in a long time. It's IBM's new visual development environment, and it's a knockout. VisualAge is a fully visual, object-oriented environment that works well for individual developers and has impressive features for teams. It lets you build applications and GUIs by pointing and clicking and drawing connections from one place to another. Behind the pretty face is a wide range of tools and functions, including an interface to relational databases such as DB2, Oracle, and Sybase. Equally or more important is a comprehensive set of DLL services that allow you to encapsulate, use, and reuse legacy code, including smart input and output interfaces that let you do pre-or post-processing on the data being passed between the legacy code and the applications you're generating. Back in the old days, we used to call them subroutines or modules. Today, they're just parts. VA ships with more than 2,000 parts, ranging from highly granular or detailed processes to complex operations. You drag the parts you need to the work area on your screen, then connect them with arrows in the order you want. Additional arrows point to the input and output fields and buttons on the screens you design. Encapsulated legacy apps become parts, and you communicate with them in the same way. VisualAge ap-plications can be surprisingly complex without writing a line of code. If you do need to write code, you drop into Smalltalk. Smalltalk and IBM? The two aren't exactly a recognized team, and therein lies a tale. IBM has made a high-level commitment to objects, open platforms, and interoperability. To do so, it has had to expand its portfolio of languages and competencies. While the objectmeisters in Austin and the Taligent toilers work on the underpinnings of the future, the languages folks have branched out to give us more object-oriented development environments such as VisualAge. These disparate pieces will take time to reach a common ground. IBM, with no track record in object-oriented languages outside C++, acquired IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 95 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES the technology underlying VA from Object Technologies International. OTI's products are robust and well respected by the object-oriented crowd and by Smalltalk insiders in particular. The first iteration of VisualAge will not have SOM support, but a follow-on release will address SOM objects, including the ability to create them in Smalltalk. VA has three great strengths: visual development, database access, and use of legacy code. It creates three tiers of users: fabricators, builders, and users. Only fabricators need to know Smalltalk; the rest can use and reuse the available objects and database links. Big companies won't bat an eye at VA's $5,000 price for the team edition. The $2,500 price might give pause to single users, but it's competitive with PARTS, Enfin, and PowerBuilder. I'd love to see a version priced below $500 to compete with Visual Basic. Developers won't object to running a 24M-byte 486, but users will have a tougher time coming up with 12M bytes to run compiled apps quickly. Still, this product is too good to leave in the IS department. IBM SHIPS 5M COPIES OF OS/2 --EARNS 37TH INDUSTRY _________________________________________________ RECOGNITION AWARD _________________ May 18, 1994 Customers Establish Popular PC Software as Industry Standard AUSTIN, Texas, May 18, 1994 . . . IBM's award-winning OS/2* has become the industry's 32-bit PC operating system standard as evidenced by the shipment of the software's five millionth copy. Since the release of OS/2 2.0 in March 1992, OS/2 has ranked consistently near the top of software best-seller lists and nabbed almost every major software award -- 37 prestigious honors in all -- from Technical Excellence to Readers' Choice to Overall Product of the Year. The editors of PC Magazine, an influential publication known for its comprehensive product testing, bestowed the honor of "Editors' Choice" on OS/2 2.1 in their May 31 issue. After extensive evaluations of 32-bit operating systems, PC Magazine recommended OS/2 over Windows** NT and other competitive products. In fact, OS/2 has shipped nearly 20 times the number of NT copies shipped to date. In awarding the "Editors' Choice" designation, the publication said, "[OS/2] impressed us with its stability, its true object-oriented GUI interface and strong DOS and Microsoft Windows emulation." The publication rated OS/2 "Excellent" in the following categories: Application Development, DOS and Windows Emulation and Networking and Connectivity. "OS/2 continues to prove the skeptics wrong as it converts more and more users," noted industry consultant Sam Albert, president of Sam Albert Associates, Scarsdale, N.Y. "OS/2 is delivering today what Windows NT IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 96 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES hasn't and Chicago hopes to deliver -- a reliable, industrial-strength 32-bit operating system." The readers of InfoWorld, a PC publication targeted at people involved in all areas of computing, recently gave OS/2 top honors in two categories for the second consecutive year: "Overall Product of the Year" and "Software Product of the Year." In addition to sweeping these readers' choice awards for the second year, the editors of InfoWorld recognized OS/2 this year with yet another "Product of the Year" distinction for interoperability. "OS/2 2.1 was the only operating system where we could get NetWare, LAN Server and TCP/IP running simultaneously and still be able to run all our OS/2, DOS and Windows applications with RAM to spare," beamed Nicholas Petreley of the InfoWorld Enterprise Team. "Combine that with the multitasking and powerful OS/2 Workplace Shell, and we can't imagine ever going back to a DOS/Windows environment." Another Product of the Year Award Earlier this year, readers of DATAMATION also selected OS/2 as their "Product of the Year" for a second straight year. OS/2 won the readers' choice award in the very competitive PC Software category. "The fact that both readers and editors of top computer publications are recognizing OS/2 -- in some cases for two consecutive years -- is a strong testament to the growing momentum and industry-wide enthusiasm for OS/2," said Wally Casey, director of marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products division. "Users and editors alike are demanding a powerful operating system, and as the growing number of awards illustrates, they are repeatedly choosing OS/2. Combine this with the fact that we've shipped more than five million copies of OS/2 and there's no doubt that OS/2 is clearly the leading 32-bit PC operating system on the market." In addition to receiving top honors in the United States, OS/2 has been recognized around the world by numerous publications and industry organizations, ranging from a "Best Chinese Information Product of 1993" award from Taiwan's Chinese Micro-Computer Extended Foundation to a "1993 Must-Have Award" from Soft et Micro in France. Most recently, OS/2 earned a Technical Excellence Award from France's PC Expert and was named "Operating System of the Year" by Germany's CHIP Magazine. "Since its release, third-party support for OS/2 has grown to 2,000 applications, according to IBM's director of personal operating systems, Lois Dimpfel. A list of ISVs with applications for OS/2 includes such vendors as Lotus Development Corp., which recently announced a new version of SmartSuite for OS/2.... 'We have been talking a great deal in terms of Windows but not OS/2,' said Hilme Ozguc, a Lotus product manager. "But he added that customer feedback indicated that people were not willing to wait for the next major release of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows, and were saying 'We are disappointed with Windows NT, so we are going to go with OS/2...." Not only is IBM seeing results from third-party support, its OS/2 for Windows operating system is selling well, according to IBM officials. The company contends that IBM has shipped 500,000 copies of OS/2 for Windows since its introduction at Comdex/Fall, and overall IBM shipped 5 million copies of OS/2 since its introduction...." TCP/IP FOR OS/2 A WINNER! _________________________ An article in the May issue of Australian Communications Magazine reviewed Windows and OS/2 TCP/IP products. The reviwers come down strongly in favour of IBM's OS/2 product above all other products reviewed. One paragraph reads:- "On the OS/2 side, we picked one winner: IBM's TCP/IP for OS/2, which offered a relatively painless configuration routine and led the pack in performance. While pundits keep up with their IBM-bashing, Big Blue is quietly making good on its commitment to open networking. TCP/IP for OS/2 is an excellent case in point: it offered not only the best performance of any package in this test but also one of the most complete sets of TCP/IP applications." PC/3270 ON THE TOP-SELLING DOS SOFTWARE LIST ____________________________________________ From "Computer Reseller News", April 25th edition IBM's Personal Communications/3270 product continues its impressive record of being one of the top selling DOS and Windows products. Corporate Software reports in the April 25th edition of 'Computer Reseller News' that IBM's Personal Communications/3270 had the second largest sales volumes of DOS software for February, 1994. This follows on the heels of a similar report in a December 1993 edition of Computer Reseller news which stated that Personal Communications/3270 was the eighth largest selling DOS software product at that time. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: -------------------- IBM Personal Communications/3270 provides easy to use host connection for both DOS and Windows users. Personal Communications/3270 supports 3278/79 Models 2 through 5, 3287 printer emulation, IND$FILE file transfer, local printing support via ZipPrint, hotspots, macros, auto font sizing, DDE, HLLAPI and SRPI support and much more. Make a list of everything an emulator should be. Then add a few lines. With IBM Personal Communications/3270 V3.1, you can have it all! IBM Personal Communications/3270 V3.1 lets you access the host mainframe from more locations, more efficiently and with more function than ever before. IBM Personal Communications/3270 does more than merely allow PCs to emulate IBM 3270 display terminals, transfer files with the host automate processes via the emulator APIs and function as a LAN gateway. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 101 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES There's new connectivity support including IPX/SPX (Netware for SAA), TCP/IP (Telnet3270) and enhanced Async support for out-of-office connectivity. FULL FUNCTION OS/2 NEARS - PCWEEK MAY 11 1994 (AUSTRALIA) _________________________________________________________ Enterprise version may preempt Chicago - PCWEEK May 11 1994 (Australia) By Mark Moore and Mary Jo Foley o IBM readying enterprise version of OS/2 with built-in .. - Systems management - Taligent Frameworks subsystem modules - OpenDoc support o Enterprise version - FF OS/2 (Full Function OS/2) will include many features expected in MS Chicago. Both upgrades are expected to ship late this year. o FF OS/2 is a key part of IBM's strategy to match MS Windows & NT offerings - officials stated at IBM's Tech Interchange conference in US last week. o For low end, IBM plans to ship in August, Personal OS/2, a successor to OS2 for Windows. o MS has spent minor amount of money on (developing) NT compared with what we've spent on OS/2 (and OS/2 on PowerPC), - Lee Reiswig Pres IBM's PSP division. "My priorities are to capitalise on NT being too big and too slow, and Chicago not being here yet." o FF OS/2 will provide hooks to security features and system management components such as DCE, which lets users manage resources across multi-vendor networks. o FF OS/2 will provide for Taligent Frameworks, a set of O O modules for graphics, device drivers, memory management, and so on that can be accessed by applications. o "Decent security management and the ability to integrate into an enterprise security umbrella would be an advantage," - PCWEEK Corporate Partner o Support for OpenDoc, the compound document architecture being developed by IBM, WP, and Apple Computer, will let users share graphics, text, data and program features among documents. o FF OS/2 will also implement the Plug and Play spec that automates configuration of PC peripherals and software. In addition, it will include requestor for LAN server, NetWare and possibly VINES IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 2, April-May, 1994 page 102 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES networks, and peer-to-peer services as an add-on, IBM officials said. o "Most people (including me!) agree that from tech perspective OS/2 is much better than Win 3.1 and it's a more mature product than NT," - PCWEEK Corporate Partner o "For me the best thing about this is a clear signal that IBM remains firmly committed to OS/2 and to competing with MS aggressively in the desktop OS arena. In the longer term that's great news for us as customers," the partner said. o Separately, IBM this month will start beta testing a new version of OS/2 geared towards the first time Windows or OS/2 user. Personal OS/2 codenamed WARP and previously known as OS/2 lite, is faster, more compact, and easier to install than OS/2 for Windows, according to Lois Dimpfel, IBM's director of Personal Operating Systems. o Pers OS/2 will run with a previously installed copy of Windows and will be able to run Win apps with native OS/2 apps, Dimpfel said. Personal OS/2 includes an updated version of the WPS interface with 3D icons. IBM developers have greatly slimmed down the OS/2 kernel by removing code for performance tracing and some hooks to external systems, Dimpfel said. This means Pers OS/2 will require only about 4M of ram to run with two apps. o Both Pers OS/2 and FF OS/2 will be offered at a promotional price of less than $US 100, said Dimpfel.
