"FaxMail for Windows" Version V1.33 is shareware Copyright (C) 1991-1994 belong to ElectraSoft. All Rights Reserved. Phone (713)261-0307 ---------------------------------------------- BEFORE ALL ELSE: We are working full time on improving and upgrading FaxMail for Windows. So...before you install, look at the date on the files inside of the the ZIPed file. If the date is more than a week old, you may want to call and get the latest version. We release minor versions about once a week and major versions when appropriate. To get the latest version of FaxMail for Windows, call 1-713-261-0307 and we will give you instructions as to how and where you can download if. LEGAL INFORMATION: FaxMail for Windows is shareware. This means you have a chance to test the performance FaxMail for Windows before committing yourself to buying it. You have a one month legal trial. After one month you must pay for FaxMail for Windows or discontinue its use. Only the unregistered version of FaxMail for Windows may be distributed freely, and no fee may be charged for it except a nominal copying fee. All trademarks contained herein are registered to their respective owners. If you have a registered version of FaxMail for Windows you may NOT share it with others. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: If you are currently using another Fax-Program, you will have to disable or remove it before using FaxMail for Windows as two Fax-Programs can not share the same Fax/Modem or run concurrently. To disable a Fax-Program you may have to remove one or more lines from your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. Typing rem ahead of a line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS will disable it. The only exception is; if you are using an Intel SatisFAXtion CAS Fax/Modem, you will not want to remove the CAS manager. ALL other (Class 1 and Class 2) Fax/Modems will use the Fax/Modem-Drivers provided by FaxMail for Windows. Since not all of the brands and models of Fax/Modem on the market have the same capabilities, and since the developer of FaxMail for Windows did not have a modem of each and every model available to test the software with, it is inevitable that some modems will not operate properly with this software. Models for which there were known compatibility problems that had not been resolved as of this release are listed at the end of this file; if you have one of these, you might want to try it anyway since there's a possibility that yours might work. The worst that can be expected to happen is that the Fax/Modem-Driver might not load or the program might hang or fail to operate, and perhaps your modem might be left in Fax mode and require manual resetting(turn it off and back on). Since information about models that don't work with this program will aid in correcting unsuspected problems, we would appreciate any information you can give us about them. Write to the registration address below, or send e-mail via Internet to: Jon.Krahmer@f10000.n106.z1.fidonet.org or FidoNet to: Jon Krahmer on 1:106/10000 with details. This program modifies the WIN.INI file to add the FaxMail for Windows Print-to-Fax, and it adds a Windows-to-DOS-Interface and a Fax/Modem-Driver to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, if needed, depending on the type of Fax/Modem you have. FaxMail for Windows also puts the driver "FM_PN_DX.DRV" in your Windows system directory { ?:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FM_PN_DX.DRV }. The Fax/Modem-Driver, as currently written, does not provide a way to remove itself from memory but it can be Disabled/Enabled. More details are given below in the section on HELPFUL HINTS. If you are using IRQ4 with COM1 or for any other purpose you will have to find another IRQ for COM3. Here are some suggestions. COM3-IRQ2 COM3-IRQ5 COM3-IRQ7 If we would have found COM2 unused we would have used it as: COM2-IRQ3. Here is a list of valid combinations: COM1-IRQ4 COM2-IRQ3 COM3-IRQ4 COM4-IRQ3 COM1-IRQ2 COM1-IRQ5 COM1-IRQ7 COM2-IRQ2 COM2-IRQ5 COM2-IRQ7 COM3-IRQ2 COM3-IRQ5 COM3-IRQ7 COM4-IRQ2 COM4-IRQ5 COM4-IRQ7 Never skip a COM-Port as the system will go into "conflict-convulsion" from time to time. If you have a MOUSE on COM1-IRQ4 and you use COM3 you will need to use one of the alternative IRQ. The same goes if you are going to use COM4 and you have a MOUSE on COM2-IRQ3. type Q {to Quit DEBUG BEFORE SOFTWARE INSTALLATION: If, while installing FaxMail for Windows you find that your Fax/Modem is not listed, it is possible that one of the selections will work. For instance, DoveFax Class 1 and Practical Peripherals Class 1 works with many other class 1 Fax/Modems. The {"Universal, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 2"} will work with nearly all of the Fax/Modems derived from the "Rockwell Class 2 Accelerator Kit". Generic Class 2, Zoom Class 2, ZyXEL Class 2, and Dallas Class 2 Fax/Modem-Drivers are all Class 2 Fax/Modem-Drivers. There are a lot of "Class 2" variations, so, if your "Class 2" board does not work with one, it may work with another. The "Universal, Hayes, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 1", "Universal, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 1", and the "Universal, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 2" Fax/Modem-Drivers are designed to do the job if all else fails. It should not always be the first choice because even though it is more versatile, it may not perform as well as the one recommended by us. Depending on your computer, another Fax/Modem-Driver may work better than our recommended one though. Sometimes, depending on your computer, COM-Port (FIFO(16550) or not), the "Universal, Hayes, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 1", "Universal, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 1", - or - "Universal, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 2" may outperform the recommended Fax/Modem-Driver. BTW, these 2 drivers support FIFO operation. If your Fax/Modem is not listed, look for an alternate Fax/Modem-Driver. An Internal Fax/Modem-Driver can be used to drive an External Fax/Modem, and an External Fax/Modem-Driver can be used to drive an Internal Fax/Modem. The name is not important. For instance, the AT&T class 1 will work on many other class 1 Fax/Modems. Choosing the wrong Fax/Modem-Driver will not harm Anything. The files in this package are modified to your specifications during installation and *WILL NOT* work properly if simply copied into your working directory. You *MUST* use the INSTALL.EXE or configuration utilities to add or change anything. "FaxMail for Windows" and "FaxMail for DOS" are compatible with one another so you can alternate between them. You can do a delayed send from Windows, drop to DOS and the send will take place on schedule. You can go into "FaxMail for DOS" and watch events from its Event Monitor even though the events were initiated from Windows. The same is true if the events were initiated with "FaxMail for DOS" and you go to Windows and use the FaxMail for Windows Event Monitor. You can deal interactively between DOS and Windows. Go into MS-Windows 3.1 or above and run the FaxMail for Windows INSTALL.EXE using the Windows NEW command or Windows RUN command. AFTER SOFTWARE INSTALLATION: If you choose a full installation, you will have several icons in the FaxMail for Windows Group. One of the icons is "Read Me" and another is "FaxMail Tutor". These should be read before using FaxMail for Windows. There is also help buttons throughout for your convenience. Everything is explained thoroughly in the FaxMail for Windows help system, which may be called upon from anywhere in FaxMail for Windows. If you want to use FaxMail for Windows from within any Windows Application and/or take advantage of *ALL* the power FaxMail for Windows has, load the "Control" program that you will find in the FaxMail for Windows Group before loading any other Windows Applications. After the Control program is loaded, click on the System button and choose SETUP and configure things *YOUR WAY*. I suggest that if you are not sure of something, leave the defaults set as it came to you. Make a printout of the defaults in case you change something you do not understand yet. HELPFUL HINTS: "Silent Answer" Silent Answer requires the support and cooperation of the remote sending Fax/Modem/Machine with your receiving Fax/Modem. If the sending Fax/Modem/Machine does not support "Silent Answer" by sending the "CNG" tone, you will lose that Fax! Please read *all* of this area before using "Silent Answer". If you still want "Silent Answer", here is what it does and how to implement it. Silent answer let one telephone line be used for two purposes; receiving FAXes with the Fax/Modem, and receiving voice calls with an answering machine or telephone. When set to this mode, the Fax/Modem lets your answering machine answer all incoming calls. If it detects Fax "CNG" tones, it routes the call to FaxMail for Windows. Otherwise, it just sits silently on the phone line while you or your answering machine takes the call. When the phone rings and after the second ring the Fax/Modem will start monitoring the telephone line. If it detects a Fax tone, it will receive the Fax. If it does not detects a fax tone, it will do nothing. Silent Answer hardware installation When installing the Fax/Modem, DO NOT plug the answering machine into the telephone jack on the back of the Fax/Modem. Instead, do one of the following: a. Plug the answering machine and Fax/Modem into different wall jack (i.e. jacks in different rooms). b. Plug the answering machine into a wall jack and the Fax/Modem into the answering machine. c. If your answering machine has some kind of phone-jack switching; use this method. You must locate the two devices on separate extensions to make silent answer work correctly. This means you can not plug the answering machine into the Fax/Modem or vise versa. You can split a single extension with a duplex jack adapter. Radio Shack commonly carries these, part number 279-357 for $4.49. Also, if you have an older answering machine that does NOT automatically turn itself off when it detects that a person or the Fax/Modem has answered the call, you need a $7.95 adapter from from Radio Shack, part#43-107. This adapter disconnects the answering machine from the phone line when the call is answered. It goes between the answering machine and the wall jack. Note: The device that is picking up the line initially, must answer after, and not before, the second ring. This means you should set it to 3 for best results. If no other device picks up the line by the time the number of rings that FaxMail for Windows is set to is reached, FaxMail for Windows will answer it and process a Fax. To activate Silent Answer Load the FaxMail for Windows 'Control' program and click on the Button, Button and on the Silent Answer Button. Set the number of rings until we answer to four and set your answering-machine to three rings. If the Silent Answer Button is inactive and gray, your Fax/Modem does not support Silent Answer. How to enable auto-load When you boot-up, you have a choice as to weather you want to load the FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver or not. If you plan to always load the FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver, you can place y or Y behind the Fax/Modem-Driver. Here are two examples: examples #1 (First line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT) C:\FAXMAIL\FM_ROCK2.COM will ask: Do you want to load the "FaxMail for Windows" Fax/Modem-Driver? (Y/N) Y examples #2 (First line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT) C:\FAXMAIL\FM_ROCK2.COM Y The Y parameter will cause the Fax/Modem-Driver to load without asking. It will always load without stopping or asking. BBS and FAX on the same computer Method - 1 - Windows: There is an ICON, FAX vs BBS, in the FaxMail for Windows Group for the purpose of alowing you to control the Fax/Modem mode. -Before you call a BBS, double-click the ICON and chooes: . -Load your BBS-Software and log-onto the BBS. -After logging-off the BBS and exiting the BBS Software; to resume FAXing, double-click the ICON again and chooes: again. DOS: Method - 2 - Before you call a BBS, go to the DOS Prompt, and type: C:\FaxMail\BBS-MODE.COM Log-onto the BBS. To resume FAXing, go to the DOS Prompt, and type: C:\FaxMail\FAX-MODE.COM Method - 3 - Note: In these example; do not type the comments that appear to the right of the {. If you want to use the same computer for Fax and data-modem(BBS), it may be necessary to Disable the FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver while calling a BBS. To Disable FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver run: BBS-MODE.COM. Use FAX-MODE.COM to Enable the Fax/Modem-Driver again after you log-off the BBS. Here is an example of a Batch(.BAT) File that will do it all for you. Lets say that you are using a BBS program called Telemate, and it's name is TM.EXE. The following Batch File will Disable the "Fax/Modem-Driver" load "Telemate" and when you exit the BBS program (Telemate) it will "Enable" the Fax/Modem-Driver so you can resume FAXing. At the DOS Prompt: COPY CON T.BAT {Create file(T.BAT) C:\FaxMail\BBS-MODE.COM {1st line in file(T.BAT) PAUSE {2nd line in file(T.BAT) CD\TELEMATE {3rd line in file(T.BAT) TM.EXE {4th line in file(T.BAT) C:\FaxMail\FAX-MODE.COM {5th, and Save(T.BAT) - or - Using a text editor, create a file called T.BAT with the following 3 lines: C:\FaxMail\BBS-MODE.COM {Set Fax/Modem to Data-Mode(BBS) PAUSE {Pause to let Fax/Modem catch up(4 seconds or more) CD\TELEMATE {Change Directory to BBS Software TM.EXE {Load BBS Software C:\FaxMail\FAX-MODE.COM {Set Fax/Modem to Fax-Mode(FaxMail) The above example assumes that your FaxMail Directory is FAXMAIL and your Telemate Directory is TELEMATE. Now when you want to call a BBS you type: T Method - 4 - To remove FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver, type "rem " in front of these two lines, in your AUTOEXEC.BAT: rem C:\FAXMAIL\FM_ROCK2.COM rem C:\FAXMAIL\FM_DS_IN.COM ....and RE-BOOT. To restore back to "FaxMail for Windows", reactivate the two lines, in your AUTOEXEC.BAT: C:\FAXMAIL\FM_ROCK2.COM C:\FAXMAIL\FM_DS_IN.COM ....and RE-BOOT. NOTE: If your Fax/Modem is a CAS (or CAS compatible) board, such as the Intel SatisFAXtion, you might not have to remove the Fax/Modem-Driver for data-modem(BBS) use. If you hear the modem give a short beep tone after dialing but before the line has been answered, your modem will probably not operate properly for data communications with the Fax/Modem-Driver installed. In some cases, to reset your modem to data mode, you may have to manually reset the modem (if it's external) or turn the PC off and then back on (for internal modems that don't reset any other way). QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: - 1 - Q. When I am booting and while my AUTOEXEC.BAT is loading I hear two BEEPs and the Fax/Modem-Driver and Windows to CAS Interface say they are not loaded. A. If your Fax/Modem is turned-off or hung, or the Fax/Modem-Driver you chose is not compatible with your Fax/Modem or computer, the Fax/Modem-Driver will make a BEEP and fail to load. When the Windows to CAS Interface(FM_DS_IN.COM) is loading it checks to be sure that the Fax/Modem-Driver is properly loaded. If the Fax/Modem-Driver is not properly loaded, Windows to CAS Interface will make a BEEP and also fail to load. - 2 - Q. FaxMail for Windows does not run or does not run properly. A. If you are currently using another Fax-Program, you will have to disable or remove it before using FaxMail for Windows as two Fax-Programs can not share the same Fax/Modem or run concurrently. - 3 - Q. None of the Fax/Modem-Drivers work. A. Be sure you have the latest Version. FaxMail for Windows is being updated continuously. We may have a new Fax/Modem-Drivers that will work for you. As of the time this was written there had been 33 revisions, Versions V1.00(FAX-V100.ZIP) to V1.33(FAX-V133.ZIP). - 4 - Q. I set the sound/volume/retries but my Fax/Modem ignores my changes. A. (a) The DoveFax and some other Fax/Modem do not support volume and speaker manipulation. (b) If you have a CAS Fax/Modem you will have to use their SETUP program to set sound/volume/retries. - 5 - Q. I did the INSTALL.EXE and re-booted, but the Fax/Modem-Driver didn't even attempted to load from my AUTOEXEC.BAT. A. FaxMail for Windows put a Fax/Modem-Driver and a Windows-to-DOS-Interface in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. Look in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and see if you have a menu or jump command ahead of the Fax/Modem-Driver and/or the Windows-to-DOS-Interface. If so, move them to a place in your AUTOEXEC.BAT where they will load, preferably, first. The Fax/Modem-Driver and a Windows-to-DOS-Interface look something like this: C:\FAXMAIL\FM_ROCK2.COM C:\FAXMAIL\FM_DS_IN.COM - 6 - Q. I removed or commented the Fax/Modem-Driver from my AUTOEXEC.BAT and now when I try to run ant Windows program that has a print-routine in it, I get a message saying: +----------------------------------------------------------------+ | This Function requires a Fax/Modem-Driver and Windows to CAS | | interface (FM_DS_IN.COM) to be loaded before entering Windows. | | | | 1. Did you re-boot after installing FaxMail for | | Windows? If not, re-boot the computer now. | | | | 2. You may have to reinstall FaxMail for | | Windows with a different Fax/Modem-Driver, | | and re-boot. | +----------------------------------------------------------------+ A. If you had a power failure while in Windows or you crashed out of Windows while FaxMail for Windows was active, your Default-Printer-Driver may have been replaced with the FaxMail for Windows Fax-converter ("Fax/Modem Printer Driver on LPT1"). Solution: Close the FaxMail for Windows "Control" Program. Load the Windows Control Panel and select Printers and choose the Printer-Driver that you want as your Default-Printer-Driver. Note: When you have the FaxMail for Windows Control loaded and the PRINTER OR FAX TOGGLE is toggled to FAX, Windows swaps from your Default-Printer- Driver to "Fax/Modem Printer Driver on LPT1". When you toggle back to PRINTER or exit Windows, Windows swaps back to your Default-Printer-Driver. If you crash out of Windows, Windows does not get a chance to swap back, so the next time you enter Windows it thinks that "Fax/Modem Printer Driver on LPT1" is your Default-Printer-Driver and when FaxMail for Windows makes it's swap it swaps "Fax/Modem Printer Driver on LPT1" for "Fax/Modem Printer Driver on LPT1". - 7 - Q. I do not know what kind of Fax/Modem I have. Who made my Fax/Modem? Q. I want to know more about my Fax/Modem. Is it Class 1, Class 2, etc? A. Run: COMTEST1.COM and COMTEST2.COM. They will tell you what CLASS, the Manufacturer, the Model number and much much more about your Fax/Modem. After running COMTEST1.COM and COMTEST2.COM, you may need to turn your Fax/Modem (computer if you have an internal Fax/Modem) off-on and reload your Fax-Software. If you are using FaxMail for Windows COMTEST1.COM and COMTEST2.COM sends a signal to the FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver asking it to re-initialize(reset) your Fax/Modem. - 8 - Q. I tried the Fax/Modem-Driver that was suggested for my Fax/Modem, but it did not work. A1. Run: COMTEST2.COM. Test the COM-Port and see if the Universal Class 2 Fax/Modem-Driver will support your Fax/Modem. COMTEST2 will create a written report in the form of a text file (FAXMODEM.TXT). If the Universal Class 2 Fax/Modem-Driver will support your Fax/Modem, the written report will say: This Fax/Modem supports Class 2, Fax Mode. and it will say: The "Universal, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 2 -- FM_ROCK2.COM" Fax/Modem-Driver should work with this Fax/Modem on this COM-IRQ. A2. Run: COMTEST1.COM. Test the COM-Port and see if the Universal Class 1 Fax/Modem-Driver will support your Fax/Modem. COMTEST1 will create a written report in the form of a text file (FAXMODEM.TXT). If the Universal Class 1 Fax/Modem-Driver will support your Fax/Modem, the written report will say: This Fax/Modem supports Class 1, Fax Mode. and it will say: The "Universal, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 1 -- FM_ROCK1.COM" Fax/Modem-Driver should work with this Fax/Modem on this COM-IRQ. Notes: *These two Universal Fax/Modem-Drivers are designed to overcome special Problems. *If you do not know what class your Fax/Modem is, run both COMTEST1 and COMTEST2, as your Fax/Modem can and often is both class 1 and class 2. *You should turn your Fax/Modem off-on just before each test. In the case of an internal Fax/Modem, turn your computer off-on. - 9 - Q. I called the ElectraSoft Fax phone number (1-713-499-5939) and it did not work. A. Call voice (1-713-261-0307) first to make sure that it is available. - 10 - Q. I am in Windows and I try to print but the FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem Printer Driver(C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FM_PN_DX.DRV) intercepts the print-job and wants to send it to a remote Fax-Machine. A. Click on the and then on the button. Notes: *If the button has a check by it and it says "FAX IS ACTIVE", then the print-job will be printed on a remote Fax-Machine. If the button is not checked and it says "PRINTER IS ACTIVE" the print-job will be printed on your default printer. *When you toggle the PRINTER OR FAX TOGGLE, FaxMail for Windows swaps the Print-Priver found in your WIN.INI form your normal default to the 'FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem Printer Driver(FM_PN_DX.DRV)' Print-Driver. So...If the button is set to the Fax/Modem Printer Driver ("FAX IS ACTIVE") mode and you re-boot with a (press ), turn the power off-on or power failure, the Fax/Modem Printer Driver(FM_PN_DX.DRV) will be left in your WIN.INI file. As a result, toggleing the button will switching "back and forth" between the Fax/Modem Printer Driver and Fax/Modem Printer Driver Print-Driver and your actual default Print-Driver will be lost. Solution: If, or when, this happens, you will have to: 1. Click on the 2. Click on the FaxMail for Windows button. 3. Load the Windows 'Control Panel' program. 4. Load the 'Printers' program. 5. Highlight your normal Printer-Driver. 6. Click on . 7. Click on . 8. Load the FaxMail for Windows 'Control' program to reload FaxMail for Windows back-ground operation again and all will be normal again. - 11 - Q. As I am using FaxMail for Windows, a message keeps popping up; asking me if I want to allow the system to write to FM_DS_IN.COM and the FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver which is also a ".COM" file. A. You have a Virus detection program. Solution: Remove the "Virus detection" software from your AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or elsewhere. Note: The FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver(FM_?????.COM) and Windows to DOS Interface(FM_DS_IN.COM) are both ".COM" files and contain an internal configuration that is written to during the course of each session to track the ever changing "dynamically-flowing" defaults to make it easier for you to operate. - 12 - Q. There is more than one copy of the FaxMail for Windows "Control" program in my Windows StartUp group. A. If you had to try more than one Fax/Modem-Driver during installation, You will have to click once on the extra FaxMail for Windows "Control" ICON, click on Files and then click on delete. - 13 - Q. I am prone to losing dialogue-boxes behind other boxes and windows. A. If you lose a dialogue-boxes while using FaxMail for Windows, simple reload from button or ICON. Actually when you try to reload a lost dialogue-boxes, the new instance detects the old instance and sends a message to it that brings it to the top and then does not load itself. Because you get back the one you lost, you do not lose any of your work. - 14 - Q. I have pulse-dial-phone and can not get tone dial in my area. A. Click on the "SETUP" button and you can select "Pulse" or "Tone" under {Type of Phone Dial:}. - 15 - Q. I Viewed a Fax but when I tried to Print it the paper came out of my Printer blank. A. Be sure your printer is set to Portrait and *not* Landscape. - 16 - Q. When I use the FaxMail for Windows Cover-Page feature; How wide can I make it? And; What about the left and right margins? A. No more than 72 characters wide. You do not have to concern yourself with the left or right margin as there is a 3/8" left and right margin built into FaxMail for Windows NotePad for you. This will permit compatibility on Fax Machines as well as Fax/Modem to Fax/Modem to Printer supports. Note: Do *NOT* use the in the a Cover-Page file (*.CVR). - 17 - Q. When building a Cover-Page; Where should I put the Logo? A. Go into the FaxMail for Windows NotePad and open a Cover-Page file (*.CVR) and put your cursor on the first line. Select Fields and Logo. Be sure that the is on the first line in the Cover-Page file, by itself, with no other text on that line. When the Send-Fax program processes the Cover-Page file, it will use the information on that line and then remove that line, so your second line will become the first. - 18 - Q. When I want to Fax, I have to go to the button and toggle the to FAX and when I want to Print to my default Printer, I have to toggle the to PRINTER. Why couldn't that be done automatically? A. Some Windows applications get a HANDLE to the Printer-Device-Context upon entry and when you go to print, they use that HANDLE. If we were to suddenly swap from the default Printer-Driver to the "Fax/Modem Printer Driver on LPT1" Driver, the current application would crash when it tried to use the obsolete HANDLE. Note: FaxMail for Windows does send out a global message to all applications every time it swaps from the "Fax/Modem Printer Driver on LPT1" to your "Default-Printer-Driver" or back again, but not all applications pay attention to it, so you may have to toggle the before loading these applications. - 19 - Q. My Fax/Modem-Driver loads all right but when my Fax/Modem tries to answer an incoming call, it hangs up immediately. A. One thing that can cause this is if your Fax/Modem disconnects the Phone Jack after it answers and you are plugged into the Phone Jack instead of the Line (or Wall) Jack. - 20 - Q. I went into a Windows application and tried to send a Fax using the FaxMail for Windows option, but the application just wants to print to my default printer. A. AMI Pro and some other Windows applications have their Printer-Driver information stored in an ?.INI file and are not willing to swap their Printer-Driver on the fly. Solution: Before using the button, go to , and choose "Fax/Modem Printer Driver on LPT1" as your Printer-Driver. Now the will work. - 21 - Q. I chose "Universal, Hayes, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 1 -- FM_ROCK1.COM" the first time I installed FaxMail for Windows and everything worked fine. I noticed that when I chose "Hayes" that the INSTALL.EXE used FM_ROCK1.COM Fax/Modem-Driver. Later, I installed FaxMail for Windows on another computer, it also had a Hayes. This time I chose "Universal, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 1 -- FM_ROCK1.COM" because this selection uses the same FM_ROCK1.COM Fax/Modem-Driver but it would not work. A. When the Fax/Modem-Driver is being installed, it is modified by the INSTALL.EXE. These modifications will differ from one manufacturer to the next. Solution: Select the Fax/Modem-Driver by manufacturer rather than by name and be sure to use the INSTALL.EXE to install rather than coping the Drivers. If you copy the files onto your HardDrive, FaxMail for Windows will not work. MODEMS WITH KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITIES: Supra FAX Modem/Plus: Some peoples have reported good service using the Universal, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 1 -- FM_ROCK1.COM and others like the Universal, Internal/External, Fax/Modem, Class 2 -- FM_ROCK2.COM - unknown - Please let me know if FaxMail for Windows does not work properly with your Fax/Modem.
