Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM5/94349052 AB OBJECTIVES: Identification of some contextual factors associated with unprotected anal intercourse. METHOD AND SAMPLE: Two volunteer samples were interviewed by telephone. One (Project Male-Call) in May-June 1992 with 2583 men nationwide who had had male-to-male sex during the preceding five years. A further 3906 non gay community attached men were interviewed (BANGAR Project). Data were collected regarding sexual practice and its social and physical contexts. ANALYSIS AND RESULTS: Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were carried out to investigate the correlates of unprotected anal intercourse. Unprotected intercourse is more likely to occur in a 'regular' relationship; in a 'casual' relationship where the partner is known and trusted; in the home; when sexual partners are sought in straight bars or through friends. CONCLUSION: Among non gay community attached men unprotected intercourse is not so much a characteristic of the person as something which occurs in certain personal and social contexts. This leads to suggestions for education and prevention strategies.
