Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM5/94349050 AB OBJECTIVE: To improve understanding and knowledge of the social and psychological aspects of grief and loss associated with HIV/AIDS within AIDS organisations. METHOD: One of the recommendations from a National Centre HIV/AIDS grief and loss colloquium was to review policies and programs within AIDS organisations with respect to their response to grief, loss and bereavement. A national survey was sent to 95 organisations, including AIDS Councils, hospitals, hospices, HIV/AIDS units in government departments and PLWA group, with a response rate of around 60%. Questions were asked in relation to issues such as wills, mourning rituals, health needs, funeral arrangements, the impact of multiple loss, burnout and counselling. RESULTS: Initial findings indicate that a wide range and diversity of responses exist in dealing with HIV/AIDS grief and loss and in most cases are designed specifically for the organisation's predominant client population. However, there is a significant lack of experience or ongoing training in the area of grief and loss and low levels of staff support.
