Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM5/94349006 AB From 1980-85 approximately 240 people with coagulation disorders were infected with HIV through treatment with blood products. This paper outlines the progression and psychosocial impact on the 60 patients currently treated at the Alfred Hospital for medically acquired HIV. There are particular psychosocial issues related to the genetic nature of the coagulation disorders and the treatment arrangements. Together these factors mean that the impact of multiple loss on a small, vulnerable community has been devastating. Patients were infected whilst being treated from trusted centres for an incurable, life threatening disorder. Many focused their anger on litigation action. Other particular losses spring from the relatively younger age at infection. Co-infection issues impact on treatments used.
