SO Annu Conf Australas Soc HIV Med. 1993 Oct 28-30;5:47 (abstract no. SE4). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM5/94348984 AB AIM: To assess trends in age at diagnosis of HIV/AIDS among Victorian gay men METHODS: Geometric mean ages at diagnosis of HIV infection/AIDS were calculated RESULTS: Mean age at diagnosis of AIDS has been consistently about 4.5 years greater than at diagnosis of HIV infection. Both have been increasing steadily over time, 0.6 and 0.8 years p.a. since 1985 and 1986 respectively for AIDS and HIV infection. The mean ages of men known to have been infected within the 12 months preceding diagnosis of HIV infection have varied: about 4 years younger in 89 & 91, but about the same in 90 & 92 as for others diagnosed with HIV infection. CONCLUSIONS: There is substantial support here for the hypothesis that the major epidemic of HIV took place among gay men in Victoria before 1986, and that discovery of HIV infection among gay men since then has largely been in those infected prior to 1986.
