The European region has a common system for AIDS reporting, with an AIDS definition incorporating pulmonary tuberculosis, invasive cervical cancer, and recurrent pneumonia. Incidence of reported cases is still increasing, while trends show the largest proportions of female cases is continuously increasing (19% in 1993 compared to 17% in 1991). The proportion of cases aged 30 years or more is increasing (70% in 1993 compared to 65% in 1991), particularly in the drug abusers transmission group. Collaborative studies on HIV infection rates among patients visiting general practitioners, STD patients and pregnant women show large variations among countries, similar to those found in AIDS surveillance. Social crises in the Eastern part of the region with shortages of health equipment, development of drug use and the sex work industry create new challenges.
