By December 1993 Bombay (Maharashtra) has reported the highest No. of AIDS cases (231) and 13,797 high risk group Elisa reactives. To have an yearwise estimation on transmission & prevalence of HIV in Bombay and other parts of Maharashtra and to suggest measures for prevention and control the present study was undertaken. Baseline Survey of prostitutes in Bombay revealed 60000 brothel-based Commercial Sex Workers having HIV positivity to be 20% (1990), 35% (1991), 40% (1992) and 45% (1993) with an average sex contacts a day to be 4. HIV positivity rate has shown a constant rise of 5% per year. By the year 2000 A.D. 80% of Commercial Sex Workers would be HIV positive, No. of sex contacts with infected prostitute would be 5,76,00,000 from the present level of 3,24,00,000 and 5,76,000 would be HIV positive in Bombay alone. HIV prevalence among blood donors has doubled in a period of 1 year. Blood safety policy has prevented 13991 HIV infections. The study recommends immediate control & preventive measures on war footings in Bombay.
