SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(2):251 (abstract no. PC0369). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371660 AB OBJECTIVES: To bring solidarity amongst the CSW to use condom and health for mother and child. METHODOLOGY: Surat red light area is the only red light area in Gujarat State and the city is crowded with the immigrant workers from the far off states. There are about 500 CSW, 80% are from other states and 10% are from Nepal. Only a few madams are from Gujarat. The brothel houses of Surat are distinctly different from other cities, as the girls here enjoy more freedom and liberty, less opression from madams and muscle men. Our visit to the red light area was to understand the environment, their feelings and values. We realised that first of all they are mother and then they are sex workers. They give lot of values to the family life and each one wanted their children to get education and job. They did not know anything about AIDS and they refused to do sex with clients who wanted to have sex with condom. We work to unite them together to use condom under the slogan No condom No sex, through the peers. Our next step is to bring the immunization programme for the children of this locality and informal schooling this will be done in liason with other NGOs. CONCLUSION: The girls in the area are very cooperative. In the mean time they are already aware about the use of condom and base line study has been started.
