METHODS: 169 female Thailanders held in custody in charge of overstay etc. between Jan., '90-Aug., '91 in a district of Tokyo metropolitan area were interviewed regarding their social background before coming to Japan and their possible involvement in sex work and sexual practice during their stay in Japan. In a separate study > 500 female Thailanders attended to STD clinics were asked for the regions in Thailand where they came from. RESULTS: Our results demonstrated that 50% of them were below 25 years-old, that 69% had school education up to junior high school, that 78.1% were unmarried or divorced, that 40% were from northern-eastern districts of Thailand and that only 9.5% experienced apparent or potential sex work in their own country. Of interviewed 154 reported their involvement in sex work in Japan with average stay period of about 9.5 months and the number of clients approximately 19 per month. It was shown that sex work was practiced frequently without using condom and geographically majority of them worked in the districts surrounding Tokyo rather than in Tokyo. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSIONS: The present results seemed informative in the context of HIV epidemiology in Japan and highlighted the importance of targeting and supporting female Thailanders engaged in sex work in the HIV prevention strategies in Japan.
