SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(2):249 (abstract no. PC0358). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371646 AB OBJECTIVE: This work is resulting from a study on the prevalence of the type 1 virus of human immunodeficiency (HIV-1) identifying probable risk factors and HIV-1 co-prevalence with the surface antigen of hepatitis B virus (HBsAg). The study has been realized in an harbour city, named Paranagua, in the state of Parana, Brazil, in 1992, managing prostitutes. METHODS: Data collecting was possible by means of some questionaires and blood samples to identify the presence of antibodies of the HIV-1 and of the HBsAg. RESULTS: The seropositiveness frequency of the HIV-1 was 4.5% and HBsAg's was 3.0%. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of HBsAg is statistically related to the HIV-1's presence. The fact that prostitutes were not using condoms because they didn't consider it important and the sexual intercourse among the prostitutes and bisexual partners were proved as majors risk factors statistically significant for the HIV-1 infection.
