To study the seroprevalence of HIV infection in 04 prisons of Rio de Janeiro State: 2. To provide information, counseling, health care and psychosocial assistance to inmates: 3. To form information multipliers out of the inmates. METHODS: Since May 1993 a multiprofessional team composed by physicians (01), medical students (08), social workers (02) and psychologists (01) provide weekly visits, regular lectures on STD/AIDS, confidential and voluntary HIV testing, counseling before and after serology, health care and psychosocial assistance to inmates from 04 prisons in Rio de Janeiro State: Talavera Bruce, Moniz Sodre, Evaristo de Moraes and Ary Franco. The program is supported logistically by the government of Rio de Janeiro State. RESULTS: A seropositivity rate of 36.7% (32 out of 87) (voluntary testing). The way of acquisition of HIV infection was homosexual route in 34.37%, heterosexual + IV drug use in 34.37%, heterosexual route in 9.37%, bisexual route in 15.62% and blood transfusion in 6.25%. Inmates frequently feel themselves stimulated in making questions during lectures, asking for personal counseling and HIV testing and in being a channel of dissemination personal counseling and HIV testing and in being a channel of dissemination of information. DISCUSSION: Even having been recently implemented, we believe the program is of utmost importance in providing appropriate message, counseling as well as health and psychosocial assistance to inmates. We hope the program will prove to be the embryo of a broader and more ambitions policy for preventing HIV transmission in prisons and providing health and psychosocial assistance to inmates in Rio de Janeiro State.
