Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371628 AB OBJECTIVE: In psychiatric patients there are some groups who have great risk of HIV infection. Nevertheless data are not yet available on HIV prevalence among the mentally disordered patients in Japan. METHODS: Subjects were the mentally disordered patients who might have risk factors of HIV infection at Tokyo Metropolitan Matsuzawa Hospital from February 1987 to December 1993. We tested for HIV-I antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and if positive we confirmed by the Western blot assay. Moreover we carried out chart review study of these subjects about hepatitis B surface antigen (HBV), hepatitis C antibody (HVC), rapid plasma reagin test (RPR), Treponema pallidum hemagglutination test (TPHA), and their histories of homosexual behavior and use of intravenous drug. RESULTS: We tested 1701 subjects and only 3 patients were seropositive both ELISA and Western Blot assay. All of 3 patients had histories of homosexual behavior. There were no patients who were seropositive because of sharing of injection drug needles. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The result indicated that HIV seroprevalence of mentally disordered patients in Tokyo was very low at present, and the greatest risk factor of HIV infection was homosexual behavior.
