Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371626 AB OBJECTIVE: analysis of the characteristics of patients, having discovered their seropositivity within the last twelve months, and presenting for the first time at a hospital between 1 July 1992 and 30 June 1993. METHODS: The data presented were taken from DMI 2, the medical software which contains information about HIV patients presenting at hospital. Of 5501 patients presenting at least once at a hospital, 704 were new patients and had discovered their seropositivity within the last twelve months. 594 adults were finally included in the study. RESULTS: Homo/bisexuals (38.9%) and heterosexuals (37%) were the most commonly occurring groups. Drug addicts represented 13%. Of 594 persons included in the study 453 had not yet developed AIDS. Of these, heterosexuals were the largest group (41%). It was the same for patients whose CD4 level > 500 mm3. CONCLUSION: This study shows the emergence of heterosexual transmission groups and a reduction in the proportion of HIV infected drug addicts. The data, however, were restricted to hospitals. This conclusions are very important for the French perception of the trends of the epidemic and will lead to changes in prevention policy.
