Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371618 AB OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the extent and pattern of engagement of garbage collectors in Egypt in sexual activities, and whether it is possible to influence their sexual behaviour to protect them from HIV. METHODS: Cairo, being the Capital of Egypt, has many garbage collectors. There are an estimated 30,000 gathering in five districts in Cairo. The Arab International Center for Fighting Against AIDS has prepared a social program in 1993 to provide care for 1000 of garbage collectors with the aim of AIDS control by fostering sexual behavioural changes through discussion groups. RESULTS: It was found that 41% of garbage collectors were adolescents below 20 years of age. By age 14, 27% of them were sexually active, rising to 74% by age 18. Reasons for becoming sexually active at an early age include: low social status, bad occupational circumstances as garbage collectors, poverty, ignorance, peer pressure, rape, overcrowded dwellings and lack of parental supervision. No of HIV+ve cases by ELISA test were 9 persons among 150 ones (6%). DISCUSSION & CONCLUSIONS: It is essential to change their occupational circumstances, improve their socio-economic condition, fight illiteracy and provide health and sex education.
