To educate medical practitioners in the presentation, appropriate investigation and management of patients presenting with HIV related symptomatology. METHODS: The Caribbean Epidemilogy Centre (CAREC) appointed an Ad Hoc Committee on Clinical Management of HIV/AIDS to produce guidelines for the clinical care of individuals infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus that would be applicable to the Islands of the Caribbean region. The Ad Hoc Committee met with WHO representatives and decided to adopt the WHO guidelines. In accordance with the WHO protocol a consensus meeting was held in Port of Spain, Trinidad to adapt and produce regional guidelines. RESULTS: The guidelines are clear and unambiguous. They utilise a clinical flow chart or algorithm format with a presenting clinical state leading through appropriate investigations to recommended treatment modalities. They are set at three levels of complexity of care depending on available health facilities. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The guidelines have been printed and distributed to all doctors in the region. Educational seminars are being held to educate and familiarise practitioners in their use. Their utilisation is expected to result in a significant improvement in the clinical care of persons infected with HIV in the English speaking Caribbean.
