OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the knowledge of donors as regards AIDS and to know their attitude and behaviour concerning the test, in order to argue in favour of the need for integrating counselling within the transfusion centre. METHODOLOGY: A survey was carried out into the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of donors using an anonymous questionnaire distributed among 33% of blood donors during May 1993 (100/334) at the Brazzaville centre. RESULTS: 95% know about the methods of transmission and prevention of AIDS; 64% can distinguish clearly between HIV asymptomatic carriers and AIDS. 96% say they have changed their sexual behaviour; 94% are not worried by the systematic testing for HIV infection. 82% accept being informed about their test result. CONCLUSION: The integration of a counselling service can be justified, given the results of the survey, but measures must be taken concerning personnel and their training, the suitability of premises and the existence of departments to take responsibility for this.
