Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371580 AB The Pilot Transitional Residence provides social and health-related services to HIV+ children from high-risk backgrounds in Porto Alegre, Brazil and seeks to facilitate their reintegration into stable living situations. The Residence houses children of up to eight years of age who have been judicially sent to the state government's Fundacao de Bem-Estar do Menor due to abandonment, neglect and other socioeconomic factors. Using a multi-disciplinary team of social service, legal and health professionals, the Residence provides individualized, family-type support directed towards guaranteeing the children's basic human rights. In 11 months, 18 children have been served and there is a waiting list for placement. Hospital stays have been reduced and the children's overall quality of life has improved significantly. This project demonstrates that a transitional residence can improve the quality of life for children with HIV/AIDS and suggests that governmental agencies can play an important role in an area of social services typically left to charitable and non-governmental organizations.
