SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(2):228 (abstract no. PB0924). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371559 AB OBJECTIVE: To review the quality and quantity of nursing care for the first Japanese HIV+ patient with GBS. METHOD: Review and analysis of the nursing record for the 9 months with emphasis on the correlation between the nursing practice and the patient's morale. RESULTS: The 1st stage (1-3 months); the 51-year-old male patient was depressed and extremely weak, being totally dependent on the nurses, who were devoted and spent lots of time with him. The 2nd stage (4-6 m); some nurses got exhausted and questioned the treatment; the patient was frustrated because no recovery was apparent. The 3rd stage (7-9 m); he began to recover slowly but steadily. Nurses became confident about assisting him appropriately not only from the physical but also the mental side. CONCLUSION: At first, the nurses were too involved in the care of the patient, but it was mandatory to support a patient suffering the double shock of HIV and GBS. The nurses successfully took care of him as a team. The patient was put in the private room, enabling him to receive intensive care.
