Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371556 AB Follow-up of patients involved in clinical trials produces a close relationship between patient and nurse during a long time. To insure a better quality of life and protection of healthcare worker against burnout, it is necessary to use specifics validated tools like nursing process and nursing diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: Elaborate a nursing follow-up form incorporating prevalent nursing diagnoses in AIDS patients in clinical trials, and after six months evaluate the impact on quality of life of patients and nurses. METHODOLOGY: The methodology used is integrated research with internal consultant. The subjects chosen where all patients involved in a clinical trial for more than 6 months and the two nurses of the center. After a nursing assessment, nursing diagnoses were identified and reported in a specific follow up form. All of them were controlled by the patient himself with an auto evaluation questionnary. At the end of a six months study, the impact of this kind of follow-up was measured using quality of life scales (Karnofski and interview). RESULTS: The study is to be finished on the 1st of July 1994. The first results show that there is a real impact of this kind of care on relationship between nurse and patient, and probably on compliance with the trial. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: This study is going to demonstrate that patients involved in HIV clinical trials for long periods need specific follow-up from nurses additionnally to medical one. Use of international specific tools like nursing diagnosis may allow more critical measure of impact of nursing care on compliance and quality of care not only for patients in HIV clinical trials, but also for other patients. This need more studies.
