SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(2):226 (abstract no. PB0919). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371551 AB OBJECTIVE: To define the role of nutritional cofactors namely Zinc in association with Vitamin 'A' in AIDS and their usefulness in prevention and therapy of AIDS. METHODS: Using the available data in the literature, theoretical conclusion was drawn that Zinc and Vit 'A' deficiency is a possibility in AIDS cases during Dec. 1985 and a hypothesis namely the role of Zinc in AIDS was putforth. It highlights 1. Zinc in the development of symptoms and signs of AIDS. 2. Vit 'A' role in immune response and AIDS. 3. Zinc in Vit 'A' mobilisation from liver. 4. Zinc and Vit 'A' as a preventive and therapeutictool. RESULTS: Zinc deficiency in AIDS cases was noted by Libanore et al (1987) and Vit 'A' deficiency noted by Semba et al (1993). These studies prove our hypothesis. CONCLUSIONS: Zinc and Vit 'A' deficiency were noted in AIDS and their role in Prevention and therapy are highlighted.
