Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371525 AB OBJECTIVE: To humanize the clinic environment in which AIDS patients are treated--create a bridge to the community for HIV/AIDS education--empower the artists to create long term goals that promote confidence and self esteem to enhance quality of life. METHODS: A loosley formed group of people whose lives have been impacted by HIV/AIDS, they volunteer their time because they care about human life. They operate under and are part of the Volunteer Services Department of the Medical Center. This program empowers patients to take an active role in living with HIV/AIDS. RESULTS: The efforts have resulted in quarterly art shows that have transformed the three story HIV/AIDS Clinic into an art gallery. The work is on display continuously and is enjoyed by patients, staff and the public. Some works have been sold and the participants who are patients, and the staff are enjoying a better quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: We can document that patients at end stage have actually gained weight and taken on a new interest in living since their participation in this program. Other patients have gained a new sense of worth and rediscovered talents that they can now share with others. Some are discovering pride in leadership qualities. Staff benefits from sharing the patients' interests in a positive way.
