Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371515 AB OBJECTIVES: Highbridge Woodycreast Center (HWC) is an AIDS residential nursing facility in south Bronx, New York. We have been utilizing alternative treatment (acupuncture, Chinese herb, vitamins) as part of our treatment services since it opened in May 1991. HWC's approach is to combine hollistic and standard medical therapy for the optimal treatment for PWA's. Our objective is to provide treatment to our residents using nature therapies that would not cause adverse side effects. Chinese herbal formula, Herb Tea #1, was given in capsule form to 103 residents. Short-term effects of Herb Tea #1 has been followed and studied for its effects on the HIV population at HWC. METHOD: Residents were given the option of taking Herb Tea #1 from September 1991 through December 1993. A total of 103 patients were given Herb Tea #1. 43 of them took the formula for less than 3 months, 33 took the formula for 3 to 5 months, and 27 took the formula for 6-24 months. RESULTS: There was a marked increase in T4 cells, T4/T8 ratios, WBD and RBC levels. Improvement in symptoms ranged from 8-65% in these residents. No side-effects or toxic reactions were reported with the groups taking Herb Tea #1. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: As a nursing facility, HWC already sees the increasing in the weights and lab data of its residents. Residents taking Herb Tea #1 also experienced reduction in opportunistic infections and presented greater improvement in their general health over the 19 residents who didn't take the herb.
