Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371513 AB OBJECTIVE: The objective of this analysis was to compare the quality of life (QOL) of wasted HIV-1+ (H) patients (pts) and healthy controls (C). METHODS: The QOL of 21 H was compared to 18 C utilizing a modified version of the MOS-30 QOL form. The modified QOL form contained 18 questions which were rated on a 5-point scale. Scores were transformed linearly from 0 (poor) to 100 (best). The form was completed by H and C pts in < 5 minutes. Pts with infections, diarrhea, known malabsorption or dysphagia were excluded. Baseline characteristics were: Wt (H:65.3 +/- 4.2 kg; C: 70.0 +/- 7.1 kg) and BMI (H: 20.6 +/- 1.6; C: 22.1 +/- 1.6). The QOL form contained 5 major categories: Wt Perception (WP), Appearance (App), Physical Functioning (PF), Role Functioning (RF) and Energy/Fatigue (EF). RESULTS: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. All QOL domains were significantly decreased in the H pts, with the exception of RF. PF (R = 0.91) and RF (R = 0.87) correlated with overall QOL in H, but not in C. CONCLUSION: The H pts perception of their Wt, App, PF, and EF was poor and had a negative impact on their overall QOL. New therapies directed at increasing wt may have a positive impact on QOL.
