SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(2):215 (abstract no. PB0872). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371504 AB CONCERN is an Irish NGO working in Rakai District -Uganda on Socio-economic Consequences of AIDS. OBJECTIVES: Utilise the natural, available herbs to alleviate the common symptoms of Aids METHODS: CONCERN is collaboration with Traditional healers and herbal practioners identified the commonly used herbs for the treatment of common AIDS syptoms. Participants in the exercise were selected at village level through the village leaders and Home-Care visitors. These practitioners brought samples of herbs, and individual interviews were carried out on the name of herbs used, disease treated, part(s) used, preparation and how it is administered. Additional information on these herbs is got from reliable and reputable sources--Uganda Pharmacopoeia, Government herbal Analyist, and select readings. Information on the selected herbs is passed on to the villagers through the participants selected for the exercise. RESULTS: Following the analysis of a common AIDS--related disease identified by villagers, three herbs have been recommended for each disease. Patients visited and given these herbs report some change in their health. More people are planting the herbs not to exhaust the environment. CONCLUSION: This is a dynamic exercise and application in a society which is Western Medicine--difficient, with very few, scattered health centres and few trained health personnel. As more scientific knowledge becomes available the recommended herbs will be adjusted accordingly.
