 AB    OBJECTIVE: To promote development of traditional medicinal practice in
       AIDS care. METHODS: Traditional healers were encouraged to strengthen
       their organisations for effective information sharing. Healers were
       trained in safe medical practice, clinical investigation and
       counselling; and facilitated to collaborate with medical doctors in
       herbal clinical trials. RESULTS: Pilot comparative studies indicate that
       herbal therapies are at least as effective as conventional medications
       for management of weight loss, diarhoea and herpes zoster. CONCLUSION:
       Traditional medicine should be promoted for poor rural communities: it
       is accessible and effective for palliative AIDS care.
