SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(2):214 (abstract no. PB0869). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371500 AB OBJECTIVE: To determine if Punica Granatum is helpful and well tolerated by patients with HIV/AIDS. METHODS: For a period of 8 1/2 years, three hundred ninety self selected patients aged 1 to 67 years entered the study after oral or written consent. They had clinical AIDS confirmed by ELISA or Western blot. The fresh or dry poundered Punica Granatum tea was taken orally 150mls three times per day to adults for fourteen days consecutively. Progress report was recorded by each patient or relative. RESULTS: In 8 1/2 years 90% of the patients were in stage 3. Three hundred and seventy patients (95%) stopped diarrhoea in two to four days' duration, they gained weight and no one reported severe drug reaction. Of 30 patients who died, only 20 patients (5%) had episodes of diarrhoea. CONCLUSION: Punica Granatum was found helpful to combart diarrhoea in the majority of AIDS patients. Further research is needed to figure out the Punica Granatum's mode of action.
