SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(2):209 (abstract no. PB0850). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371474 AB OBJECTIVE: To determine the cost and payment distribution for unlimited dental care provided to HIV (+) patients that live in or near two cities in New Jersey (Tot. Pop. 350K). METHOD: There are two special service dental clinics in N. Jersey for the treatment of potentially infectious patients. They provide emergency and/or comprehensive care to patients regardless of ability to pay. Cost of service rendered to 492 new HIV (+) patients from July 1, 1991 to June 30, 1992 was retrieved as was the source for payment. RESULTS: The total fees charged were $180,544. The reimbursed costs were $43,408 and the unreimbursed were $137,136. The average number of visits per patient was 2.75. Facility overhead and fee reimbursement were provided by State and local governments. The percentage of the fee paid by patients was: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Over 52% of the patients were unable to pay for treatment. Almost 25% paid less than half of the fee and 25% paid more than half. Results indicate that in a population of about 350K with a high HIV (+) rate the uncompensated cost for dental care will be about $150K annually.
