Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371430 AB OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the clinical and laboratorial occorrence of hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, hypoinsulinism and hyperinsulinism in carries of the HIV, in the different levels of the infection. METHODS: 36 patients (pt), amay 20-50 years of age, without any prior history of Diabetes Mellitus, were classified in 4 groups (G): 10 pt with anti-HIV(-) tests (GI) and 26 with anti-HIV(+) tests, amay these pt, 10 pt non symptomatics (GII), 6 pt with ARC(GIII) and 10 pt with AIDS(GIV). The evaluatin was done by the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) with simultaneous dosage of insulin. The statistical methods used were ANOVA and Newman-Keuls. RESULTS: One case of hypoglycemia was found in GIII (16.7%) and 4 cases in GIV (40%). Comparing the medium of the results of the lasting plasma glucose ans insulinism from the area of the curve of the glycemia and the total amount of insulinism there were no significant statistical difference among these groups, however, it was verified significant statistical difference related to the area under insulin curve (p < 0.0005). CONCLUSIONS: a) The clinical and laboratorial hypoglycemia observed in the GIV, was not statistically significant when compared to the other group; b) There were not found any case of hyperglycemia; c) Hiperliberation of basal insulin in the group II seems to be related hypermetabolism on this phase; d) Minor value of the area under the insulin curve as well as the total amount of the insulinim in the group IV was significant statiscally and its multifatorial cause.
