Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371424 AB OBJECTIVE: Qualitative change in the myocardium has been described in patients as specific and non specific myocarditis, interstitial fibrosis and neoplasias. This study aims to determine some stereological parameters in the myocardium from AIDS/HIV+ patients. METHODS: Nine hearts from AIDS/HIV+ autopsies were studied: 7 men + 2 women, the mean age was 36.8 +/- 4.1 (SE). Three fragments of the superior portion of the cardiac left free wall were fixed (buffered 10% formaldehyde), serially sectioned (10 microns of thickness) and stained (haematoxylin-eosin). Ten pairs of optical disectors were studied to each case considering the vertical axis of the tissue. Counting in the look-up plane counted were considered to determine the numerical density of myocytes [Nv(m)]. The volume density was determined to myocytes [Vv(m)] and non-myocytes (connective tissue+vessels) [Vv(nm)] parts of the myocardium. Comparison of the results with normal myocardium has used the Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS: The means (+/- SE) of the values are: Nv(m) = 37,326.4 +/- 2,188.4 1/mm3; Vv(m) = 80.8 +/- 1.8% and Vv(nm) = 19.2 +/- 1.6%. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The figures found in this study are not significantly different from those described in normal myocardium (p > 0.05). The confidence interval at 95% of the values had great intersection between these two groups (AIDS/HIV+ and normal individuals). More research in a more important sample of cases is need to restudy this topic.
