Document 1175 DOCN M94A1175 TI No additional expansion of immune activation parameters in 264 AIDS patients with opportunistic infections (OI) as compared to patients with AIDS due to OI but without actual OI. Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371400 AB OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether expansion of parameters indicative of immunologic activation--as communicated previously--is due to late stage HIV-disease per se or whether it reflects additional activation due to immune responses against opportunistic infections. MEASUREMENTS/PATIENTS: Lymphocyte subsets (absolute number/microliter) CD4+, CD3+ HLADR+, CD3+ CD57+; serum Neopterin (NPT) (nmol/L), beta 2 microglobulin (beta 2) (mg/dl), and gammaglobulins (%); 357 patients with AIDS as defined by OI. Grouping of OI and patients numbers see table below (means +/- SD). RESULTS: For each variable one-way analysis of variance revealed that none of the OI and none of the parameters showed significant differences as compared to a group of AIDS patients without actual OI (group 6). TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: Expansion of the investigated activation parameters in AIDS (Group CDC C3 with OI) seems to be due to activation by HIV, rather than to additional immunological responses upon opportunistic pathogens.
