METHODS: Thirty seven students of Nursing Aid School of Instituto de Infectologia Emilio Ribas answered a standardized anonymous questionnaire, after visiting (Jul.-Sept. 92) families of AIDS patients that had died in the period from 1986-1990. RESULTS: From a total of 37 nurse students, 94.6% (35/37) had already worked with AIDS patients; 17/35 (48.6%) attested an improvement in understanding the illness whereas for 16/35 (45.7%) there was no change because of their previous knowledge; 34/35 (97.1%) informed that after the visits they changed their attitude toward the patients with AIDS and their families and 33/35 (94.3%) referred that the visits stimulated them to continue their work with AIDS patients. Among requirements, the HCWs referred they felt should be improved or introduced were: 26/35 (74.3%) continuous training and availability of biosecurity materials; 19/35 (54.3%) permanent psychological support; 16/35 (45.7%) need of a satisfactory salary; 35/37 (94.6%) thought that home visits were important and should be part of the daily work of HCWs. The interviewees view as fundamental posture of HCWs dealing with AIDS patients: 31/37 (83.9%) patience, comprehension and love to the patient and care to others; 8/37 (21.6%) to have no prejudices. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Home visits can be considered an important tool to arouse consciousness of HCWs dealing with AIDS patients.
