Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370386 AB OBJECTIVES: The Islamic Medical Association of Uganda is carrying out a pilot project to educate the Muslim community in two districts of Uganda about AIDS & behaviour change for AIDS prevention. METHODS: Two districts Mpigi & Iganga with high Muslim populations were selected. Imams and their Assistants were trained to give AIDS education to the community for behaviour change through regular family visits. RESULTS: Imams, their Assistants and the Community are responding positively towards programmes. Circumcision and ablution of the dead are recognized possible transmitters of HIV and increased use of gloves and new blades during these operations is significant. Pressure situations which lead to risky sexual behaviour are replaced by womens and youth groups carrying out money generating activities. More condoms are being distributed though they are still controversial among the Imams. CONCLUSION: Although the pilot project is still in its infancy, the encouraging positive response among the Muslim Community and its participation in the project is a challenge to the implementors and donors to continue with this project and spread it further in the country.
