Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370378 AB OBJECTIVE: To disseminate AIDS awareness among adolescents in Higher Secondary Schools through five systematic workshops (WS). METHODS: WS1--Sensitization for all teachers of IX, X, XI, XII Std. with identification of peer educators. WS2--Specialisation for a few special teachers and parents through one day In-house training program. WS3--Demonstration by Teachers for Peer educators. WS4--Performance by peer educators for fellow students. WS5--Monitoring school program on AIDS education. RESULTS: Performance by Peer educators for fellow students is more effective in those schools where all four workshops are systematically completed. Out of 480 city schools DESH has targetted to cover in 3 years, one-sixth has had WS1, out of which 50 schools have completed all Ws4. As a result, 10 Schools have independently started youth movement through stage Plays/Teleplays, Exhibition, Slogans, Poems, Projects, Flip Charts etc and developed it as community out-reach efforts. DISCUSSION: Coverage of all city schools aiming at maximum participation and involvement within the next two years is feasible only if the program is incorporated in the school curriculur activities and a weekly period is made mandatory to cover social health education focusing on prevention of AIDS.
