Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370369 AB ISSUE/PROBLEM: Promoting AIDS prevention among cult membership is perceived to be difficult if not impossible due to their seeming invincibility and their adherence to initiation ceremonies and exchange of blood among members. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: Following the death of A.S.F., a member of Pyrates Confraternity in OA University, Ile-Ife Nigeria of complications of AIDS in January 1993, an indirect link was made with other members, leaving pamphlets on AIDS prevention in their meeting place. Also, they were encouraged to call on a telephone number (local AIDS Support Group) provided if they have questions. RESULTS: Under the 'occult' atmosphere of our link, 12 out of 17 remaining members individually talked to us on telephone, 10 found our pamphlets useful and 5 volunteered for anonymous, unlinked HIV serology test. All 5 were HIV negative (ELISA). One member was no longer willing to 'mix blood' with a new member of unknown HIV status. LESSON LEARNED: By maximising opportunities and with appropriate strategies, it is possible to reach out with AIDS preventative efforts to all sectors in the community.
