Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370322 AB OBJECTIVE: To compare initial CD4 lymphocyte counts among asymptomatic HIV+ individuals tested voluntarily and involuntarily. METHODS: Records of all HIV+ patients followed in an HIV clinic at a public hospital in New York were reviewed and those asymptomatic at initial presentation identified. Initial CD4 cell counts of patients referred after testing for insurance, immigration or blood donation (group A) were compared to counts of patients (group B) undergoing voluntary testing. RESULTS: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: We found no evidence that involuntary or imposed HIV testing identifies infected individuals earlier in their disease than voluntary testing.
