Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370248 AB OBJECTIVE: To assess high-risk sexual behavior in HIV-infected and uninfected men with TB in Abidjan. METHODS: From 07/89 to 02/92, HIV-1, HIV-2, dually reactive (HIV-D), and HIV-negative men with TB were enrolled in a cohort to evaluate their response to TB therapy. Upon enrollment, all men were asked about frequency of sexual contact with prostitutes (Pros) and non-prostitutes (NPros) in their lifetime (ProLf and NProLf) and in the past year (ProYr and NProYr), if they had an STD in the past 5 years (STD 5Yr), and if they had ever used condoms. RESULTS: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME CONCLUSION: In Abidjan, where 85% of Pros are HIV+, the high levels of sex with Pros, STD, and condom neglect among men are alarming. Sex with Pros is a critical risk factor for HIV-1, HIV-2, and dual HIV infection among men in Abidjan. HIV-uninfected Pro and NPro women are also at high risk of HIV infection, as 42% of HIV+ men had sex with Pros and 82% had sex with NPros in the past year.
