The collected data is analyzed and updated monthly. In May 1992, the PNC DST/AIDS established systematic cross-sectional surveys for HIV prevalence (sentinel surveillance). The sentinel system based in standardized protocols was established in selected STD and antenatal clinics nationwide. OBJECTIVE: To examine the need for AIDS case reporting and HIV serosurveillance in the overall HIV/AIDS surveillance strategy in Brazil. METHODS: To assess the geographical distribution of HIV infection and AIDS cases in Brazil, HIV prevalence results (90% CI) from sentinel STD clinics were tabulated and compared with AIDS cumulative incidence in 5 representative cities in Brazil. RESULTS: It was observed significant differential distribution of the cumulative incidence of AIDS cases. The results from the sentinel surveys in the same cities showed a homogenous distribution of HIV infection. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSION: While AIDS case reporting reflects the burden of severe HIV-related morbidity, HIV serosurveillance permits monitoring of more recent pattern of HIV infection. These two surveillance approaches are complementary and provide indispensable information for prevention and control of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
