Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370213 AB OBJECTIVE: This study describes trends in place of deaths with AIDS, specially among persons aged 25-44 years. METHODS: Data are from the Department of Vital Statistics and were obtained from deaths certificates for 1990-1991 who mentioned AIDS as a cause (ICD9 279.8). We analyzed, cases, mortality rate, proportion of all deaths, sex, age and the specific code. RESULTS: AIDS mortality rate increased from 0.7/1000 inhabitants in 1990 to 1.7/1000 in 1991 (80%). In 1990, 110 persons died from AIDS; 58% were between 25 and 44 years of age (0.2% of all deaths). In 1991, 181 HIV people died (0.5% of all deaths); 62% were aged between 25-44, and became the second leading cause of deaths at this age, being heart diseases (ICD9 390-429) number one and neoplasms (ICD9 140-149) the third. CONCLUSIONS: The impact of AIDS in mortality in our city was predominantly in persons aged 25-44 years. AIDS at this age, became the second cause of dead in Buenos Aires city, surpassing malignant neoplasms.
