Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370183 AB OBJECTIVE: Research efforts sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health to develop effective strategies to prevent or reduce the risk of HIV infection and to prevent or treat neuropsychiatric sequelae of HIV infection among women will be reviewed. METHODS: Prevention strategies, methodological approaches, settings, and specific populations will be reviewed across approximately 32 studies. RESULTS: Convergent findings will be presented across studies that specify effective techniques associated with a reduction in high risk behaviors will be discussed. In addition, data on effective behavioral and cognitive strategies associated with reduced stress, improved quality of life, and disease progression will be presented. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: NIMH has been the lead in developing behaviorally based prevention strategies to reduce the spread of HIV infection in USA. In addition to a summary of each research project, this poster will present a synthesis of the research findings on women will be presented. Methodological issues that emerge from the review will also be presented. A handout will be available so that interested persons can contact the PIs on each research grant.
