Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370159 AB OBJECTIVE: To investigate the HIV-1 transmission from mother to child, we tried to detect the HIV-1 associated markers. METHODS: Samples from 4 HIV-1 seropositive pregnant mothers, 2 children born by cesareans and 2 fetuses from therapeutic abortion were assayed. We tried to detect HIV-1 antibody, p24 antigen and proviral genome and isolate HIV-1 from peripheral blood, cord blood, amniotic fluid, placenta, tissues of fetuses using western blot, antigen captured ELISA, PCR and tissue culture, respectively. RESULTS: HIV-1 proviral genome were detected in peripheral blood from 4 mothers but we could neither detect p24 antigen nor isolate HIV-1. None of HIV-1 markers except antibody has been detected in the samples from their children and fetuses. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: No case of HIV-1 transmission from mother to child has been confirmed. It was suggested that PCR was more useful and effective method than the other ones to investigate HIV-1 maternal transmission. We are going to follow up their children and continue the investigation.
