PC0135). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370131 AB OBJECTIVE: To analyze the epidemiologic differences of HIV infection between male and female intravenous drug users (IDUs). METHODS: 650 IDUs consecutively admitted to a drug dependence unit from February 1987 to October 1993. RESULTS: Age at admission: (25 yrs), length of addiction (74 months) and the age at the beginning drug use (19 yrs) show no differences between male and female IDUs. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: Female IDUs become HIV infected earlier than males, at least for the first months of addiction. Differences in patterns of sexual relationships and drug-using practices could play a role in the higher risk of HIV infection among female IDUs.
