METHODS: Interviewed HIV infected patients, STD clinic physicians, news media, government officials, college students, religious leaders, entertainment celebrities and the general public. RESULTS: In India the estimation of HIV infected people are approximately 3 million and it is growing very rapidly due to the lack of awareness, education and preventive methods. Majority of the infections are due to the promiscuous heterosexual behavior, drug addicts sharing contaminated needles and the third major reason is using contaminated blood for blood transfusion. CONCLUSION: Country like India being one of the most populous country in the world, will have more HIV infections if not controlled by education and prevention. Based on the current estimation there are about 100,000 prostitutes in Bombay alone and more than 40% of those are infected with HIV. Average they make six contacts per day will extrapolate to 240,000 new HIV infections per day. If this trend continues India will have more HIV infections in the world within few years. Socio-economic conditions is one of the main aspect for this old job to flourish. Government should take major interest in preventive actions and regulate all the blood bank to avoid using any contaminated blood. Change curriculum to add HIV/AIDS educational information from the 8th Grade. Religious leaders, Community Organization and entertainment celebrities should get involved jointly to create awareness.
