SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):288 (abstract no. PC0074). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370066 AB OBJECTIVE: To examine the seroprevalence of HIV-1 infection among young Thai men entering the Royal Thai Army (RTA) from 1990 to 1993. METHODS: Each year, over 50,000 young men are conscripted to serve in the RTA. The conscripts are selected by lottery throughout Thailand in April and are inducted in May and November. All inductees are routinely screened for HIV-1 antibody by ELISA with Western Blot confirmation. Prevalence of infection by location of conscription is presented here, while prevalence by location of residence is presented elsewhere. RESULTS: Observed HIV-1 Seroprevalence Among Young Thai Men (Percent). TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: The overall seroprevalence of HIV-1 among young Thai men entering the RTA has increased since 1990. The highest seroprevalence is found in the North. However, the seroprevalence in Bangkok, Central and Northeast regions has more than doubled during this period. Clearly, effective interventions are needed to slow the spreading epidemic in Thailand.
