Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370064 AB OBJECTIVE: To compare rates of prevalent HIV-1 infection, and HIV risk factors among 4 cohorts of male Royal Thai Army (RTA) conscripts in northern Thailand. METHODS: 4 cohorts of 21 yr old men were tested for HIV-1 at entry to the RTA (1991 & 1993). HIV prevalence was measured with ELISA and Western blot. Risk factors for HIV were assessed by interview and analyzed with Chi Square. RESULTS: HIV prevalence at baseline in the 4 cohorts was: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. Chi Square analysis for trend was not significant. The combined 1991 cohorts in comparison with those in 1993 had an earlier age of sexual debut (60.65 vs 50.1% for age < 17 yrs, (p < .001), and were more likely to report a lifetime history of any STD (42.2% vs 32.2% (p < .001). Analysis of risk behaviors across the 4 cohorts showed that lifetime condom use increased from 78.2% to 90.4% in cohort 4 (p < .0001). Condom use at last sex increased from C-1 58.4%, C-2 63.6%, C-3 82.9%, C-4 84.4%, (p < .0001). Sex with a CSW in the last yr declined from C-1 71.9%, C-2 68.1%, C-3 49.7%, C-4 38.5%, (p < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest there may be a decline in some risk behaviors, and an increase in condom use among young northern Thai men from 1991 to 1993 and a stabilized HIV prevalence. Continued educational and behavioral interventions will be necessary to control the epidemic of HIV-1 in northern Thailand.
