Our objective was to study the epidemiologic pattern of AIDS in the Canary Islands (Spain). The first case of AIDS was diagnosed in 1984. From 1984 to October 1993, 348 cases of AIDS has been diagnosed and the distribution corresponding to both provinces is 187 to Las Palmas and 161 to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The mortality rate is 54.8 ant the age groups that has been studied shows that 72.8% of cases corresponding to people between 20-39 years old. The islands are the only Spanish region that shows in a part of them the same pattern of risk factors than the European community, homo-bisexual transmission followed by I.D.U. And this is a curious fact because this situation is only present in Las Palmas and not in Santa Cruz de Tenerife that is only 100 Km from Las Palmas. In this province 56.7% de patients are homo-bisexual and 21.4% are I.D.U.; In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 38.5% are I.D.U. and 26.7 are Homo-bisexual. The opportunistic infections are the most frequent diseases with 55.8% followed by extra pulmonary TB with 14.9%. The difference between provinces may be due to the tourism influence of Europeans that choose Las Palmas as vacational destination, due to their beaches, during the winter or the transit of people arriving from North and Central Africa, from countries with a high rates of prevalence, with commercial purposes.
