SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):27 (abstract no. 082B). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369986 AB OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of genital tract infections and behavior associated with these infections in HIV-infected (HIV+) women. METHODS: Women recruited from STD, methadone maintenance, and HIV clinics were interviewed and tested for 6 genital tract infections. RESULTS: HIV+ and HIV-uninfected (HIV-) women were similar in age (median = 35y), income, & race. About 38% of HIV+ and 31% of HIV- women reported ever having syphilis and/or gonorrhea. Prevalence of genital tract infections in 324 HIV+ and 258 HIV- women is summarized below. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME During the previous 3 months, 39% of HIV+ and 19% of HIV- women used antibiotics, and 77% of HIV+, compared with 59% of HIV-, women had no sex or always used condoms (both p < 0.001). Also, 91% of both HIV+ and HIV- sexually active women had only 1 sex partner during last 3 months. CONCLUSIONS: The low prevalence of genital tract infections was similar in HIV+ and HIV- women and may be explained by the median age and high prevalence of protective behaviors, especially in HIV+ women. Screening for these infections should be similar in HIV+ & HIV- women.
